You guys need to look at the rules as put out by the sponsors of the race.

Go to http://www.bikenewyork.org/security and read the FAQ's. A rider can carry a hydration system of 420 cubic inches but not in a back pack. It can be carried in a fanny pack.

What the security issues deal with are rucks that can be jettisoned easily and are big enough to carry something that can do some harm.

The point of the whole debate is how much we give up for the illusion of safety. Is 'even one death' avoided by preventing bombings or shootings worth multiple hospitalizations and highly likely deaths due to dehydration and heat stroke?

And, by the way, we give up liberties as a condition of travel on public transportation...again for the illusion of perfect safety. Many of us do not have the option of staying home.

I'm not a believer of trading liberties for safety. My questions for the NY race would be:
1. Did the city/state/feds pressure the event organizer to impose the restrictions?
2. If they initiated it on their own, why would they ban 420 c.i. backpack hydrators for the participants and not 420 c.i. fanny pack hydrators?

There are no guarantees in life. Walking out the front (or back) door leaves one open to events beyond your control. Heck, even sitting inside your home leaves you vulnerable to events beyond your control as well.

I'm opposed to government cameras on every street corner. Yes, it is a public venue, but I have no interest in moving towards "1984" monitoring (and before any J.A. speaks up about thought police crap, I don't really care how/what anyone thinks, just don't peddle your garbage here).

Peace my Grendel brothers, take a breath and relax. WE arent the problem, hell I joined 6.5 Grendel to learn and talk about my newly acquired deer rifle not discuss 2nd ammendment infractions by our Govt. But alot has changed since Newtown and Aurora CO and Boston. We didnt have anything to do with anything but i'll be damned if I dont wake up everyday with our Politicians/Govt telling us what I can eat, what I can drink, how big that drink can be. Ive watche them as theyve systematically attack our Constitutional right to bear arms. I've recently watched LEO's on t.v. pulling an unarmed populace out at gun point and verbal threats with no warrant or even probable cause. Ive watched our Federal Govt lie, lie and lie on Benghazi. So im not saying theres any conspiracy but I can tell you that I dont recognize my Country anymore, the place I grew up in is gone.
