What "tyrannical" actions are you referring to? I certainly dislike a number of changes that have occurred in this country over the past six decades, but AFAIK they have all been implemented lawfully.

I don't maybe their infringement on the right to bear arms. I've got a friend that lives out in San Diego. He just recently received a $450 ticket for having a gear shift knob that resembled a grenade. The ticket was technically for having a replica of an illegal weapon.
How about the executive order sealing the evidence in the Fast & Furious or the NFA. Legal or not those are tyrannical acts by the standards of our Founding Fathers. I've heard a phrase used recently that couldn't be more true, "Our Founding Fathers would be shooting by now."

Huh? Open borders, banning the second amendment,"assault weapon ban, magazine ban," Banning the first amendment,"no religion on government grounds, hate crimes meaning thought police, abolishing due process of the law, "drone strikes of American citizens ,privileged sectors of society, Congress and senators who live by different laws than the people who elect them, gun runner, the president declaring war instead of congress, private banks controlling our monetary policy"the federal reserve, etc, etc etc.
Tyranny certainly has taken place in California. Where I'm from, the Nuisance Abatement Teams come to mind:

IMO, the Founding Fathers primary interest was gaining power, not eliminating tyrannical acts from government. Example: One of the complaints against British "tyranny" was a royal tax levied on booze; opposition to that tax helped fuel the American Revolution. But, what was one of George Washington's first acts after becoming President? Placing a "tyrannical" tax on booze!

Today we have the majority"government workers and Obama phone people" living off the shrinking tax payers. When you have no stake in the game like war, taxes, or even making a living, its easy to become complacent and have apathy towards freedom ,the Constitution or anything else

The bill of rights means what it says, not what who ever in power at the moment decides it means. Maybe you read it like this. A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state the right of the people to own antiquated sporting arms deemed legal by who ever is in power at the time shall not be infringed . I thought justice was blind in this country not determined by your pocket book or ones level in government. I guess the prez not the congress, which is legally bound by the Constitution to declare war can send the military in and kill lots of people and call it a police action or what ever and it magically becomes a none war. The president use to ask congress to declare war but today it isn't even a formality. You may think the actions I noted above are legal but I must respectfully disagree with you.

Gents, I've lived in Europe for 10 years. I've seen "social democracies" in action. We are nowhere near the European socialist states.
That being said, I'm not happy about quite a bit that has been "enacted" here of late...nor happy about FDR and LBJ for that matter. There has been some stonewalling, some questionable actions, but we still have a system with three branches of government that are independent and check each other. Don't think its true?...how about the recent defeat of background checks (and amendments). Could it be better?...obviously yes. But we are merely mortals and imperfect.
There have been questionable laws/acts throughout our history. Even some of the founding fathers enacted some dubious laws. Have we been drifting away from rugged individualism and self sufficiency? - yes.
However, I take great offense to characterizing an entire country as communist when we aren't even close. Go checkout the true communist states still left and see.
I might make fun of California from time to time and spell it with a "k", but that state certainly has a socialist bent being full of hollywood crack pots (and the like, particularly in the education realm) in the three major population centers. But you won't catch me spelling America with a "k", and I take quite a bit of umbrage with the spelling...apparently so do others (to include most vets that haven't lost their minds to conspiracy theories).

The complaint against the tax had nothing to do with it being on booze (ok the fact that it was on booze probably did push it over the top). It was due to the fact that the KING was forcing the colonist to pay for a war with France that they wanted nothing to do with.

The holocaust was implemented "legally."

In theory, it's supposed to be. In reality, it sometimes isn't.

That's reassuring, I guess I took a different history class and have a different take on our founding fathers and what our country was suppose to be. After the war they wanted Washington to become a king and he turned it down. That doesn't sound like a power hungry person. BjornF16 is right about some of our founding fathers and our young country. I don't think its a conspiracy to see the arrogant, pushy, self serving, want to be dictators in this country re-defining my constitutional rights. It is not a conspiracy to read the constitution, look at how it is being defined and then come to the conclusion that it starting to stink. Maybe if I lived in a socialist nation for 10 years this country would look a lot better but I grew up in remote Montana and lived as a free person without a big nanny state telling me how to wipe my nose. I guess I will never get use to a cage.

Being less free doesn't equate to living in a communist state. If you equate the USA today as a socialist/communist nation, then you don't know what a socialist/communist state really is. I spent 10 years in Europe as part of my US military service. I was always cognizant of the differences between our societies and system of government.
I also said: Quote: Have we been drifting away from rugged individualism and self sufficiency? - yes.

This is the type of insanity I'm talking about. At what point does the frog determine he's at a boil? I don't want to change the point of this thread so I will end it here.
I see eye-to-eye with a lot of your sentiments Bjorn. There's an article I just read that I feel is highly appropriate for this discussion. The opening paragraph began as such:
Quote:The attributes that best describe how America is governed are executive over-reach, legislative complicity, judicial partisanship and journalistic decadence.

Comparing the US and Europe
The European Socialist Democracies are kept afloat by a clearing house in the US for American wealth, along with the US not only footing the bill for European security, but backing it with American bodies and military presence in the post-War era...while we have certainly surpassed them in redistribution of what wealth we have left here to the welfare queen class in America, who enjoy many luxuries that were only known by royalty up until the past few generations.
One interesting difference in Europe is that the small segment of upper middle class has similar buying power, assets, and less square footage in their domiciles when compared to our "poverty" class, but our luxury-welfare class has bathtubs (a European rarity), combined with the irony of lower personal hygiene standards.
Direction US is going
A significant majority of our politicians have been indoctrinated in universities where Marxism/communism is taught as a superior politico-economic system to our own, and have slowly grown in prominence since the Teddy Roosevelt Administration. The concern over communist takeover is real, while nobody can logically make the argument that we are anything like Cuba, North Korea, or the former Soviet Union...but what direction are we headed?
Current Regime
We certainly have a bastard occupying the White House who was illegitimately sired by two unashamed useful idiot communists, whose grandparents were communist, and has surrounded himself with nothing but communists and pink babies from the Chicago Alinsky new left movement, which openly advocated conversion of America to a Marxist-Leninist state by slow evolution, rather than radical, violent revolution.
These are matters of historical record, so I think any true American should be aware of and concerned by the direction our Nation has taken. The conspiracy is open, where its perpetrators honestly believe that tyranny is superior to freedom, as long as they're in charge and have the power to make our decisions for us.
Key to Success is Education
As did Lenin, Stalin, and the Bolsheviks, their success relies on uneducated masses being aroused with emotion against a propped-up enemy, which is always the evil bourgeois land-owners, business owners, employers...people with the vision and the hard work behind their private sector efforts. This is why owning the public indoctrination system has been so crucial to their success.
America's Unique Checks and Balances Pose a Challenge
What's different with America is that never before have a people been able to wrestle free from the yoke of bondage under tyranny, then set up a system where the people maintain the power, with certain limited functions enumerated and assigned to three separate, and co-equal branches of government that are supposed to protect the people from the other branches. By referencing the article, we can assess our current state of being by asking specific questions about where we stand today:
Is it true that we are governed by executive over-reach? Do I need to mention that even though each State has its own Executive-a Governor, we still have over a hundred years of Presidents who have felt it necessary to meddle in the domestic affairs of the Nation.
Obamacare is a glaring offense in the face of liberty and significant majority opposition in that regard, as are Johnson's Great Socialist Society, FDR's egregious usurpation of power by appointing KKK members and other rubber-stamp justices to the SCOTUS and stripping fully-integrated Americans of certain ethnic descent of their Constitutional Rights, Woodrow Wilson's signing over of US control of our own coining of currency to foreigners while launching the supra-national entity known as the League of Nations and setting the precedent for the eradication of the Nation-State into the future...
Do we have an environment of legislative complicity? When has the Congress brought up impeachment proceedings for a President who has engaged in war against sovereign-even allied nations in the war on terror? When do we see serious Congressional investigations into extreme acts of executive branch abuse or malfeasance?
Do we have judicial partisanship? I already mentioned the major assault on the division of powers FDR perpetrated. I'm not sure I would label the SCOTUS as a partisan affair, but one where Marxists have been able to emplace Justices over the last century, who are committed ideologically to transforming the US, the limitation of powers be damned. We even have it on record where Justice Sotomayor stated that "...everyone knows that the Judicial Branch makes the laws.", and this to classes of graduating law students. And what happened with Justice Stevens changing his position at the last moment on the illegal power-grab that Obamacare is? Everyone asked what leverage this regime has on him.
Lastly, do we have journalistic decadence? Our press has been a joke for multiple generations now. Major scandals that our grandparents' generation thought were legitimate exposés like Watergate, were never fully uncovered, and the scandals have been managed by politically-savvy and connected actors manipulating inexperienced stooges who are subject to editorial censorship anyway. In the current era, we have a press that is openly slavish to the Obama regime, whereas they were openly-hostile to the Bush & Reagan Administrations. They have no credibility as such with the consumer who wants just facts and background story, rather than rallies for dear leader. I can only imagine what Archie Bunker episodes would be like today...

The USA today is what could be considered a "soft" fascism. The possibility of going to a "hard" fascism is very real. It is an over-extended bankrupt empire. Obombya's policies are fascist. Obombyacare is a prime example. Why own the cow when you can get the milk for free? Kalifornia is fascist. Scratch away at a Progressive and you find a fascist. The neo-con Trotskyites are already there. I could turn this little comment into a book with footnotes.

Good article. I don't dispute any of that. I don't like the road we are heading down, and I haven't for some time. Our kids have been mostly homeschooled because I objected to the social/political indoctrination they were getting in public schools. Can't do much about college, but at least they have firm footing. I'm happy to say they are free thinking conservatives. My youngest just made Eagle Scout, and has enlisted in National Guard. My daughter served a hitch in US Army. They are politically aware...much more than I was at their age.
This administration in particular has moved several agencies that should be apolitical into overtly political tools that promote O's agenda of "transforming America": ATF, DoJ, DoA, DHS, etc.
Prior to my hitch on NATO staff, I was a believer in NATO. I was there on 9/11.
Here is my current perspective of NATO:
Not Able To Operate
Not After Two O'clock
No Action, Talk Only
Needs America To Operate
I was so aggravated with western Europeans that I fully supported Rumsfield's comments about "old" and "new" Europe. I wish we would abandon western European bases and move East. I would much rather send money to develop Eastern Europe than continue to pour money into the virulent anti-American western European countries (of course, they "like" us when they need something...like military capability). NATO has essentially turned into a welfare system post Berlin wall.
I enjoyed working with the Polish and Czechs. They had great attitudes, wanted to learn and contribute, and had great anecdotes about living in a true communist state.
The good news is we can still make a difference. Reject political correctness. Become politically active. Get like minded conservatives politically active. This country was at an all time low (IMNSHO) during/just after the Carter years and Ronald Reagan pulled us out of it. Yes, he made some mistakes, but the real proof of his effectiveness has history now showing (and liberals also acknowledging) that RR was one of our better modern presidents. We can wake people up and elect another conservative (not yet identified) to help us turn around this country.
Fox News blew away the competition in coverage of the Boston bombings. That at least indicates there are a fair number of Americans who are rejecting the liberal slant of CNN, MSNBC, CBS, NBC, ABC...even Algore Jazeera couldn't make a go with liberal cable to compete with Fox.
From my perspective, the primary reason Our Dear Leader was elected/re-elected was due to the establishment Republican party. I no longer contribute to the Republican Party, but instead donate to individual campaigns whom espouse conservative ideals. Even now there is still a war waging within Republican party where you have useful idiots in the PR department alienating Tea Party conservatives. This has to stop. There is a growing conservative movement. People are seeing the path we are headed. There is still time to turn it around.
We are still America...
