Got quite a shocck this morning when I wanted to order a few things from Sinclair International and when I entered the order number for these Surefire Earpro Sonic Defeders only to see that they are a restricted item that Sinclairs wont ship outside the United States. Really wanted to try get a couple of sets for a friend and me.

Can someone explain how these are a national security danger as it astounds me. I can understand some of the restrictions but New Zealand is supossed to be a very good friend to the US.

I doubt there is remotely any reason to it. New Zealand is indeed undebateably a dear ally to the US for sure. I will look into this for you and if there is not anything strictly illegal about it I will be delighted to ship them to you and your buddy ASAP.

Some items are restricted for shipping internationally to another individual but if they're your personal property you can carry them out of the US with you on your departure

If it is a thermal optic or a pvs 15 or something...I get it. But we are talking hearing protection right?? How can that be a crucial tactical advantage for an opfor? Shrug.

I don't understand it either. I had a friend try to order a flashlight from an online store, not fancy or special or some out of this world number of lumens, and they would not ship it with a signed document confirming it was not leaving the country. Same thing for another friend ordering a sling.

My wife is going downrange soon. I reckon I could ask the JAG if she would get jammed up for shipping hearing protection intended for domestic only to New Zealand on the way. lol

That is what I cant understand either. I fully ( well grudgingly ) except the restrictions on brass, powder and suchlike and even many scopes are unexportable to private sales, but hearing protection is such a common product that I can't see any earthly reason for its restriction, they are simple in the ear units that have a little piece that stops them falling out and being lost.

Do you think she could find out the reason for the reason for the restriction? Will they pick up super squirrel interdepartmental soundwaves or something equally sensative.

I am pretty sure she nor nobody else can parse why companies or bureaucrats might make a rule like that.
Have you thought of Radians Hunters Ear or a similar product that will enable you to both protect your hearing AND render you able to have a conversation without raising your voice, or hear game or other noises?
When I want to just be deaf I use custom molded hearing protection that has been formed with a channel so I can put high-end earbuds in it and I can listen to music, podcasts, or books while I shoot (or cut the grass or use a chainsaw or whatever). I am not so likely to lose those as I am to get caught by my wife moaning love songs to them...again.

I have a few different sets of muffs KB from the cheap end right through to the grade 5 and while they all work they become a nucience when wanting to wear a hat and the in the ear type are the most effective for that. I have the sensguard type

but the sound of them constantly rubbing on your collar with a hat on becomes wearying after a while. I had a good in the ear set but lost one when chainsawing firewood over the summer and didn't notice it for long enough to have no hope of finding it again. The sonic defenders look like they will make a handy alternative.

Von Gruff, the reason I went to earbuds for much of the shooting and whatnot is that having cans interfered with the spot weld that I had on rifles. I imagine that is a similar constraint with wearing a cover. I pretty much permanently wear covers myself. I very often wear boonies, but do wear the earbuds with them. The Georgia sun is no joke. lol

Yes I did see them but it has taken me years to get my couple of hat comfortable and I don't see me changing them any time soon. A fleece in the cold and a light wide rimmed job in the summer. Have had a number of sun "spots" taken of my head and face over the last few years and so the wide stff brim is a must have for me. Dont think the boonie would give the protection.
I made this boonie specifically for the same reasons, as I'm of Scandinavian descent, and live at high altitude. I have gotten scorched one too many times in the mountains while shooting all day. In all my personal testing so far wearing several prototype models, I have not been burned.
My wife has an excellent cowboy-type hat she bought from her trip to New Zealand, so I know what you're talking about. I'm making the brims exceptionally wide on these boonie caps to give maximum sun protection, especially when the sun is at lower angles closer to the horizon, and the neck veil covers the rear area of the head/neck quite well. I actually received inspiration for that portion from Aussie SAS desert hats, which are much like the Rhodesian hats.
