Recommend a smith to finish my upper.

I've got a Grendel upper built using an AA billet upper w/Charging handle. Barrel is a Satern 18". YHM railed forearm, YHM flip up front site combo gas block. I've been chasing problems with it until I'm done tired.

I'd like to send it to someone to get it up and reliably running. Any suggestions?

Short stroking, ejecting to the front of the gun, stove pipe issues. I've moved my gas block around a dozen times to no avail and changed my buffer in my lower without sucess. I'll get it running right, then it seems to go out of spec. Frustration doesn't begin to describe how I feel.

Hand loads or factory ammo?

Some of my handloads ejected at 1 O'clock. Most factory at 3-5 O'clock.

You are describing issues that could all be the same problem, or several different minor issues, and I'm sure it is frustrating!

Do you have a pin gage set to measure your gas port? You can get close with a drill index. I had something similar happen with a DPMS 338 Federal barrel I had bought. It was under gassed big time. I drilled out my port and it runs like a top now. What stock are you using?

Also, pull your gas block and look to see if the gas tube port is fully open with the block's port. I had a tube once that wasn't drilled correctly and only 1/2 of it was open to the gas block.

Can you see any gas leakage around the block? I've had 2 bad gas blocks in the past 18 months. How many rounds have you shot thru this upper? Are you running the bolt dry or slightly wet? Sometimes it takes more rounds than you'd think to break in the rifles and seal everything up tight.

Also pull your bolt, make sure the gaps in the rings aren't lined up allowing gas to sneak thru.

I have seen LRS_Ranger shoot the Grendel he had built by Short action custom...Zowie, it is a shooter at 600 yards. Prior to LRS_Ranger using Short Action Custom, I had never known anyone who had work done there. All the places that have been recommended are highly respected, so I don't think you will go wrong with any of them.

For what it is worth, I agree with the previous suggestions that the issue is in the Gas system. On my gas systems, I insure that the gas port in the barrel, and the gas tube isn't obstructed. To insure that all the gas from the barrel enters into the gas block, I have the port enlarged so it is like a cone shape rather than just a hole. That way if there is a wee bit of mis-alignment, all the gas enters the system.

I had similar problems to what you describe. New gas rings solved all the problems. Apparently there was one bent, or out of spec ring.

I put one piece gas rings in all of my AR's. I've never had a problem since.
