A security guard in the front office will certainly make our schools safer. However, let me please ask you this, How difficult is it to plan an attack on a compound where the majority of the inhabitants are disarmed and you know where armed personnel are located? How much more difficult would it be to plan an attack on the same compound where a large number of inhabitants are armed and you have no way of knowing which ones are?
The unknown is a powerful deterrent.
A lesson from warfare that keeps being relearned is this: avoid being predictable. Put an armed security guard in the school and make them roam, in a random, non-predictable manner.
While I really don't mean the absolute cutting edge in latest technology...what I really mean is video cameras, swipe access, and entry doors that don't have glass you can blast out and bypass the security door...

Let's put some of our returning troops to work with this. While I am all for the idea of an ARMED security guard in EACH and EVERY school across the country, there need to be standards set in place for them. I apologize to those who might be offended by this, but: When I was in school we had a security guard. He was a very nice older ex-policeman who was fairly heavily crippled and couldn't catch a cold. Not effective. When my boy (3 years old) goes to school I want a guy like myself watching over. Someone who is trained, in shape and disciplined. Who better to fit that bill than one of our returning heros?

When I was a kid in school, we had no security guard or much security at all really. We had no "lockdown" protocol or any cctv cams or metal detectors. We didn't need it. When someone came to school, they walked in the door and talked to the secretary to arrange a meeting. Within the 25 years or so, the government has increased security measures heavily and it seems as if these are necessary now. What changed?
-The food changed.
-The water changed.
-The medications changed.
