20" SS Bull barrel, 123 gr Amax. Yes this is my 2nd Grendel that I built to deer hunt with and thought it would be easy to paint but when it came time to actually paint it I couldnt bring myself to do it so I used the camo tape instead. I can pull it off when I want, LOL.

About 8:00 a.m. I had a spike come in behind me I watched him for about 10 minutes browsing and eating. Suddenly he scented me and ran for about 20 yards and proceeded at a brisk pace away from the area. About 20 minutes later this guy comes out on the same trail and i'll be damned if he didnt scent me just like the spike. But this guy took off at a dead run with me trying track him at approximately 135-150 yards which is a chump shot. Except I was in the swamp behind me on little hurricane creek with trees at best 24-36" apart. Trust me when i tell you it wasnt an easy shot. Anyway he came to a little better shooting lane and I squeezed the trigger on my Grendel sending my Hornady 123 gr Amax through his left shoulder and out the mid rib. He ran approximately 135-150 yards right towards my stand where he dropped approximately 7 yards from my stand in front of me. Ive seen several post here doubting the Hornady Amax, well i'm here to tell you it is a deadly round brothers. By the way he was actually an 8 point but when he crashed through the swamp he busted one of his tines off. Im sure a this point he doesnt care.

I will admit I was suprised that he ran as far he did because I broke his front left leg at thethe shoulder sending the bullet through his lung but deer are tough critters. Ive shot them with my. 06 and my. 308 and had them do the same thing.

nice deer -- I noticed you said he/they scented you. (full disclosure -- I have no vested interest in what I am about to write about.) I stumbled onto this stuff this year called "Nosejammer" (actually Midway had it on sale and I bought it to try). Damn stuff is amazing so far at least. I have had no deer bust me this year, regardless of wind direction. Yesterday, I had a doe under my stand (in swirling wind) and she had to move as I lowered my rifle down so I could climb out. I don't understand how the stuff works (something about vanillin?) but it's amazed me.

Thanks Y85, ive seen it and other products as well but the thing is i bathed in a no scent wash, no scent clothes detergent and sprayed with Scent Away and both of them still smelled me. Ive seen a product called the Ionizer or something like that as well i might try but the truth of the matter is none of those things will help you if the winds blowing your scent towards the deer

I was really suprised, it was the first time i actually watched deer expire without worrying he might run off. I watched him breathe his last breath and then i climbed down and poked him with my gun. Yep dead as a doornail. Im making deer burger tonight after work and with todays prices im very greatful for my early season sucess. I mix ground beef course trimmings (1/3 beef trimmings to 2/3 deer meat and when i picked up the beef trimmings ground beef (not chuck) was $3.89 a lb. Lord people we're in for hard times in the future, better stock up on food, guns and ammo while you can because our Govt is spending us into oblivion.

Thanks, so did you get your DPMS classic 20" that we talked about?

Yes I did. I fired just a few rounds through it to make sure everything functioned correctly. I still have to buy a scope and a few other accessories for it. My Grendel is my go to gun. I did harvest a doe and a few hogs with it ( my Grendel ) last month. The big buck would not come in during daylight hours. We did get a few pics of him on game camera. Maybe next year....?

Our season is open through mid January here in Ga. Ive still got 7 deer to harvest if I wish but they'll have to go in my dads freezer because mine is slap full. At least it will be by the time I get this one done.

No thanks, coyotes give us enough to deal with but i'd be happy to come there and help you thin em down.
