a question for the high power guys
#1
after sending many thousands of rounds downrange i've reached a point where i can hold 1 moa pretty consistantly.once in a while i'll have an epifany and shoot 1/2 and think i have it wired,no way...i only shoot once a week because the range is 2 hrs. each way..[okee. shooting sports in fla.] is that enough? i feel like i'm shooting just for the sake of it and not improving..is there a threshold that when reached you need to seek guidance,or coaching?if so what are the options? i've never had any training other than the usmc, and that was more of a volume issue..i believe my rifles are up to it[savage lrpv in 6br and 24'' grendel w/ssae etc.] appreciate all your thoughts,,Rich
afterthought,,if i'm as good as i'm going to be i'm ok with that..question is how do i find out?

I'm far from being the person to offer any real advice, but you might consider the book Attainment by Troy Bassham (12 time National Champion and World Champion in International Rifle Shooting and is the son of an Olympic Gold Medalist, Lanny Bassham).

Though I don't shoot competitively, I've started reading the book and find it interesting so far.

Here's a partial quote describing the book:

Quote:95% of all winning is accomplished by only 5% of the participants. These are the Elite. In Attainment, Troy Bassham explains what separates the Elite from the rest and how you can use these differences to allow you to join them.

IMO, any traning you can get will help. I've been helped by Even other shooters watching me shoot, they can see me doing things I don't think or feel I am doing.

Hi Second Strike,

Where are you located? The best thing you can do is get hooked up with some really good High Power shooters to help you figure out how to improve. I'm the President of the Florida Sport Shooting Association and one of the High Power Directors for the state of Florida, so I can probably help you get in touch with some of the gang near you.

What discipline are you interested in shooting? Are you just interested in shooting from a bench, or considering F-Class, or joining the knuckle dragging across the course shooting which is what I do?

I have tons of books, they are good, but shooting with people who know what they are doing is what helped me focus on the important things and let the unimportant thing go. That is key because there is so much disinformation that you can chase the wrong things, things that will never help, when you could have been spending that same precious time on things that do count.

Once you have a rifle and ammunition that is up to the task then the fundamentals are where you spend your time. Sight alignment, trigger control, and follow through are the basic elements but then there are several subtle things that are nearly important. For instance, it doesn't matter if you are shooting from position, prone from a bipod, or from a bench, the rifle must track in a straight line, from the center of the target, through your shoulder, without any forces working from the side to move it out of alinment until the bullet has left the barrel. Lots of things happen between the time you mind thinks fire and the bullet leaves the muzzle. Lots of things that make that bullet wander from the intended path.

Bob,

Do you know any high power groups in the Jackson, MS area. I need instruction. When I was younger, I was shooting a .22 mag rifle) simple 7 shot Ruger that I floated the barrel and did a trigger job on. I could shoot .25 - .5 groups from 75 yards everytime when I picked through the ammo. I am not shooting that well with the 6.5. Could be a bunch of things, but I know my fundamental are lacking. Any groups in the area would be a great help!

I don't, but there is an active club near you that supports both NRA/CMP high power sling shooting and F-Class. Here is their calendar, I would suggest going and watching a few matches, figure out who is good, and ask them to help you. It is normal that HP shooters help new shooters get up to speed, even borrowing equipment and such. http://www.magnoliarpc.com/images/2012MatchSchedule.jpg
