Which chamber for a custom bolt gun?

Did you purchase the action new or was there a donor rifle?

Curious about what bolt you used...

Would a Savage 11 FCNS in 7.62x39 make a good donor gun?

I used a Pacific Tool and Gauge bolt with a Sako extractor. It's actually cheaper to do that than to blueprint a Remington Bolt and you get all the same benifits. It is trued, squared, and the firing pin while not bushed is a minimum clearance the same as if it were bushed.

The model 7 action was purchased new by me as a barreled action from the Remington Custom shop in .243. I built it into a youth trainer for my four sons and they killed a lot of big game with it, mostly mule deer, Coues whitetail deer, javalina, and quite a few coyotes and grey fox too. So the answer is yes to both, it was bought new and was a donor. I would have gone the Remington 700 short action if this one didn't have sentimental attachment. There are more bottom metal configurations available for the 700 than for the model 7, including a new one that takes AR mags.

I think the Savage would be a fine action. There is no arguing that they shoot, and shoot well.

Stokesrj,

I have an old K&P barrel that was on one of my 1000yd br guns that I took off when it was still shooting great. Its a 6.5 8.25 twist 1.25 straight.

Going to cut about three inches from the lands and end up with a 25" barrel. Wanted a short case to chamber and thought about the 6.5wssm but some sort of improved blown out version of the grendel seems more appealing.

Question is. What do you think the case capacity might be if I reduced taper, went 40* shoulder, and increased length so that I only had about 1/8 neck length?

The reaseon for the neck length being short is just an experiment or confirmation of a mistake that turned out working really well many years ago. I have witnessed an extreemly short neck/tight neck chamber shoot very low speed deviations and continuously win 1000 yard BR matches.

Thought I would call Dave Kiff and have a reamer set up to mimic the short tight neck on a Grendel just for an experiment. Have been wanting to do this for some time but until the 120 class vld's came out I didn't see the need to try.

Not hijacking, thought OP(being an experimenter) would be interested.

Thanks

Hi 999yards,
I saw that you sent me a private message but my mailbox was full, I thought maybe it might be in response to this.
I agree that a really short neck can produce very low standard deviations in velocity. My Stolle Panda actioned 6.5 Grendel was designed for short distance but very high precision use so I shoot 81.5 grain custom bench rest bullets out of it. They are seated less than 1/8 " into the case mouth and I sometimes get 6 fps standard deviation velocities out of it. That isn't appropriate for a gas gun at all, but in a bolt rifle in which the ammunition is handled much more carefully, it certainly works.
I don't think you will gain that much more powder capacity with the mods you are proposing, I would think you would still be limited to 32 grains or so.

Yeah thats the pm. Thanks for the input. You shooting Bob's bullets? I used his 7mm's for years. I suppose 32gr's wouldn't be that bad with a 120 class vld. May even keep some length in the barrel just for some extra fps.

Thanks again

Yes, if you meant, Bob Cauterucio's bullets.

Why a would you put heavy barrel on a Grendel Bolt rifle unless your going to shoot Bench Rest with it? As I see it a Micro actioned Grendel bolt action is good for two things, a light recoiling BR rifle and light weight with light recoil mountain rifle or still hunting rifle. So, why would you want a heavy barreled set-up for hunting? IMHO the Grendel in any platform is a fine Deer and Zombie killing weapon, however, although it can be used on varmits there are better and much cheaper options so why bother trying to make one with a heavy barrel? A good .243 or 25-06 will work better at distance on vermin. The Grendel shines at range with 120-130gr bullets, why try to make it into something it was not designed to be and loose the BC advantage of the .264 bullet by shortening it down to 100gr or less. Don't get me wrong, if I ever get a scope on mine I will bust a few ground hogs with it. However I can't see building a heavy barreled Grendel bolt action for any other reason other then the one you stated, because you don't want to reload for another cartridge. Each to his own, I hope she shoots one hole groups.

I'll try and answer your quetions/comments one at a time. Why would I use heavy barrel unless going to shoot BR with it? I am going to shoot BR with it. As I stated, I already have an old Bench Rest barrel in 6.5 lying around. What I did not say is that it was already a 6.5-06 and then a 6.5WSM. Stopped using it in 2003.

A micro actioned bolt gun is good for two things you say, light recoiling BR rifle and light recoiling mountain rifle. I don't get it. How can a person have a light recoiling BR (Bench Rest Rifle) and a Light recoiling mountain rifle at the same time. To me BR rifle implies a heavy 10-17 pound rifle and a mountain rifle implies a 6 pound rifle. If you are referring to Stokesrj, the Stolle Panda rifle he is referring to is a precision rifle. Neither one of us are talking about hunting rifles.

"However I can't see building a heavy barreled Grendel bolt action for any other reason other then the one you stated, because you don't want to reload for another cartridge". I'm sorry but I have no idea what you are trying to communicate with that statement.

Here it is in short, I have an Old BR Barrel that has been lying around for 9 years. Going to experiment with the Grendal Case and a very short neck in a tight match chamber. Low speed deviations are what I'm looking for and I will shoot this rifle (if halfway accurate) in some 600yd or 1000yd matches. Probably with the 120 class bullets.

Again, Why use a heavy barrel? Because its free and it shot a 3.5" five shot group at the 2002 1000yd IBS National Championship right before I took it off. So it might still be halfway accurate.

Well, I did not mean light BR rifle, I meant short action small receiver BR rifle as in Mirco receiver for stiff BR set-up. The Micro size action is also helpful in reducing weight in the Mountain type rifle.

I am sorry, I thought someone said they did not want to hand load for additional chamberings other then .308, 6.5 Grendel and something else. I guess it was not you. Either way that is a reasonable reason to want to stay with the Grendel no matter what platform your shooting it in.

Am I missing something on this? It seems not to many want to use a savage for a Grendel build. I did and Fred at sharp Shooters sent me a bolt for a 7.62x39 and it works really well. I set it in a B&C stock W/CDI bottom metal and a poly AI 223 Mag (I had to widen the lips a bit but cycles beautifully) The barrel was from Pac-Nor.
My first five shots out of it were inside a dime. I could use some practice but for me thats pretty good. I guess the savage is not as much as a challenge for the the advanced guys and I say that with all due respect. I've learned a lot from you guys, PM's and just reading the boards.
I built one on an AR platform also and that shoots sweet too.
thanks.

hawkinpup,

The Savage would be my choice, although I hope that we can talk Mossberg into making a version of their MVP in Grendel, since it uses AR mags.

That said, I would love to see what model Savage you used! Pictures!! Pictures!!!
