I did not keep my .223s. Turned 1 into 6.5 grendel sold a 2nd and will probably sell a 3rd to finance another Grendel. A better question may be why keep a 7.62x39.

One thing I like about having both is that when ammo starts to run dry on 5.56, I still have plenty of Grendel.

I would say they compliment each other very well. Any area that one caliber might be lacking, the other has it covered. IMO, having at least one rifle of each would be optimal if you can afford it.

first off let me say that I think the Grendel is a wonderful round. I love it. BUT! When the shit hits the fan ( the social & ecominic collapse of the United States) & the gangs & thugs are roaming the streets I want a 5.56mm. One reason AMMO.

Watching this thread leads me to a conclusion about the 5.56 vs Grendel. It is a three-part conclusion:

1. Those who can buy more than one AR will likely get both
   
2. Those who can afford just one AR and have SHTF concerns will probably get a 5.56
   
3. Those who can afford just one AR and have no SHTF worries will probably get a Grendel!!
   

I can't claim 100% accuracy with this, but would guess it covers the arguments in the thread.

In spite of inadequacies of the cartridge (failure to fragment below 2500 fps, fleet yaw etc), ammo is plentiful, easier to find than Grendel, unless wolf steel case is as cheap and as readily available as Russian 5.56

Best thing about .223/5.56 for my use is as a guest gun to get new shooters excited. 2nd most important use is as a SHTF survival tool.

keep a 556 because its dirt cheap to shoot. Keeping a good 556 on hand will let me save my rifles that shoot more expensive ammo for things the 556 isn't appropriate for.

If you intend on hunting varmint (smaller than coyote), then the 5.56/.223 fits the bill well. Although, the Grendel will work really well for hunting sage rats etc. It would be way cheaper to use my 5.56 instead. Especially if I am going to be shooting all the live long day. Plus, I won't get as excited if I loose the brass. As far as a SHTF scenerio, the 5.56 is a good size round for stockpiling. Takes up less space in bulk and is lighter in bulk ammo.

Other than that, the Grendel does everything better.
