Who is a good source for Colt 11.5" M4 uppers? (didn't see an option on Colt's website for semi-auto Colt Commando or uppers).

If you're looking for an actual Colt 11.5" barrel mounted to a Colt M4 upper, good luck. I would chekc with gunbroker, AR15.com Equipment Exchange, and places like that.

blaster with the reliability of actual Colt firearm...I've seen some ridiculous prices for an upper on GunsAmerica (~$1400 upper only)

All the ones I listed use barrels with correct gas port dimensions, with quality Milspec steel, and great chrome-lining. I am also having good luck with a DelTon 11.5" barrel carbine overseas, including high-volume shooting in extreme winter conditions. It is chrome-lined as well.

BCM has always been on the "a little over priced" side of the 5.56 world, IMHO.

These guys will custom build an upper to your specs for a fair price! Specialized Dynamics

There definitely is some margin in the complete BCM uppers, but their parts are priced about the same as everyone else. I forgot to mention Palmetto State Armory.

BCM has an 11.5" lightweight barrel right now, which is what I would use, but it is stripped, without the FSB attached.

I think I could build a quality upper with Milspec barrel, MPI bolt, M16 carrier, BCM Gunfighter Charge Handle, and even a KAC RAS complete for less than $799 easy. More like $650. I Cerakote all my uppers and lowers-all the parts that are exposed.

$1400 for a Colt upper is pretty whacked. I have a factory SBR registered Colt Commando (LE6933), and it was $1350 for the whole shebang... I haven't priced them lately, but you should be able to find one for less. I'd ask on Arfcom's industry section on the Colt board if nothing else...

By comparison: I just bought a Colt 6940 that lists at $1271 wholesale, so a 6933 should be had for less even with the markup!

Nice.. A couple of observations.. That sure does seem like an awful lot for a barreled upper.. Maybe if it came with the BCG.. Also 1-7 twist seems way too fast unless you are planning on using 70gr or heavier bullets..

Here is a picture of one I put together.. It's built on a Sun Devil (Billet) Pistol marked lower.. Less scope, I have about $1000 into it..

I could save some $$$ on semi bcg vs auto bcg. I believe Mk-262 (77 gr) is preferred by NSWC for their Mk-18's. I could probably save a little by not going with LMT but they are one of the suppliers for the Mk-18 and should be a quality upper.

I haven't put together a wish list at Palmetto State Armory yet...I was initially looking at Noveske barrel with Switchblock, but I'm not convinced I need it.

There's really not much down side to "too much twist" in a barrel unless you are pushing bullets to velocities that spin the jackets apart. You won't get close in a 10-11 barrel so it's not an issue. Accuracy may suffer with a few bullets but that's fixed by finding the bullet that works.

As we know, shorter barrels produce less velocity so heavier bullets are used to make up for it for terminal energy. Also, loads with heavier bullets typically function more reliably in short barrels.

Yeah, and checking my paperwork for that pistol I find it was an LMT 10.5" barrelled upper with 1 in 7 twist.. Talk about egg on ones face.. I've mainly shot factory Federal 55 gr FMJ's down that barrel, and so far it has cycled flawlessly..

I agree with your points on shorter barrels are not as critical.. Well that is unless you try to shoot a max load under a 40gr varmint bullet.. They blow apart before getting 100 yards.. Oh yeah.. And they make a wicked hiss as they go down range.. Really evil sounding..

I have the same upper and the only thing it used to have trouble cycling was 55 gr Russian ammo. I fixed that by reaming the gas port out a bit and adding a 3 position gas block.

I know the sound you speak of- I've experienced it myself with some experimental bullets I had made for sub sonic use. 1 1/4" long .223 bullets don't stabilize in a 1:9. They sure make a good WHACK when they it the target though- if they hit the target. 1:8 & 1:7- GTG.
