The Columbia River Arms experiment is over and BHW is apparently back to being BHW. They even promise to work on their ecommerce skills! I haven't seen this mentioned here so figured I'd post. Curt has come up with a new form of rifling called CLAW - which is said to be "circumferential" rifling that doesn't distort bullets with the primary application being for copper bullets. Claims are:
*Increased velocity
*Unrivaled precision
*Long barrel life
*Made for non-compressible projectiles. It works with
conventional bullets, but is exceptional for Copper.
*Not sensitive to throat wear
*Very tolerant to bullet length and weight variations

I have and have had numerous BHWs and they've always shot at or above the price point. I saw it was available in 6.5 Grendel somewhere on the website, but it still isn't the easiest site to navigate and I'm unable to "refind" it.

The marks on the bullets suggest the rifling is a variation of the elliptical rifling used for awhile by the British. With black powder, the barrels did not foul as quickly and were easier to clean.
I think it was used during the early smokeless powder days too.
I dont recall from my reading why elliptical rifling fell out of favor or never gained popularity. Manufacturing issues? Accuracy? Etc.?
That said, I dont see where this rifling would be less effective than the common rifling styles in use today. Indeed it should be less prone to copper fouling in cup and core bullets and any carbon or copper deposits should be easier to remove because no sharpish corners exist in this bore.

Soooo, what does this mean? that instead of being rectangular in cross section, and instead of polygonal, it is a semi-circle in cross section? As soon as the tangential point of contact wears down, then what, the rifling touching the projectile loosens up?

I could not tell from the marks on the bullet whether we are seeing a simple elliptical bore or more than two high spots.
The important observation is that this format should be more tolerant of wear and erosion while keeping accuracy than does conventional rifling.

In practical application to grendel... anyone here actually shoot out their "normal" barrels yet? The design claim of near optimization for all copper projectiles has my interest above all else tbh.
Any borescope shots?
