reforming primer pockets

I am not sure about this so I am asking the horde. Would it be advantageous to recut the loose small rifle pockets to large rifle? We are talking decent brass. Dave.

I would not vote for that, too many variables in the rest of the brass case head. A better idea is to find a SRP that has slightly larger dimensions... the one doesn't come to mind but IIRC one of them was slightly larger diameter than the others...
then re-do loads.

But face it, brass is a commodity, an (eventually) expendable component that has a certain lifetime. Lapua reportedly has the longest life, I have not run them but others on here have. But plan on the brass having only a defined lifetime. Used brass can be re-sold by the pound, so you get something out of the left-overs.

I vote go for it! But try it out on only 5 cases. Another option is the repair the primer pocket by swaging, there are threads about this on the forum and you tube videos as well on how to do it. I have repaired primer pockets and they worked fine the first time. Not sure how many extra times the repair will last.
I would be interested to hear how your project goes and the methods used.

I think what you would end up with would be like 7.62x39 brass with it's common large primer pocket, sized down to 6.5 Grendel. If the pocket is drilled or milled out to proper diameter in my opinion it would be fine with loads that take into account the extra pressure generated by large vs small primers.

I have a primer pocket swaging die. Use it for military cart. mostly. Loose primer pockets are not a big problem when I reload but it is there. I was wondering if this kind of fix might be out there. Dave.

Yes, it involves a ball bearing and a hammer. Not worth the effort for a .80 cent case to get 1 or 2 more firings

I wouldn't do it. Large rifle primer pockets are deeper than small rifle pockets. Not only would you be increasing the diameter of the pocket, you'd also be increasing its depth as well. That would make the thickness of the brass between the bottom of the pocket & the inside of the case thinner, hence, potentially weakening that web of brass.

Using large rifle primer x39 brass fire formed to 6.5 Grendel only last a couple loadings before the primer pockets get to loose. Same issue with early lots of PPU large rifle primer 6.5 Grendel brass.


I’m with other forum members who advise against enlarging the primer pockets. In the end of the world event for one time use of a brass case for survival, maybe. Otherwise I wouldn’t do it.

Ginex Small Rifle Primers may be of use in a situation to get another firing or two out of over size primer pockets. Ginex Small Rifle Primers are the largest diameter (.1754) I have encountered as of yet. So they may allow you to utilize primer pockets .0005 larger than spec or so. Suppose a Go / No-Go pin gauge could be useful in sorting brass for primer pocket size.
