95 T-Rex load data
#1
I been looking through all the posts and used the Google search and I haven't come with much for 95gr T-Rex load data. Has anyone used Barnes 100gr TTSX load data without any problems (stating low and working up)? I message Paul from Maker bullets and I am waiting on a reply.

Try the forum Custom Search Engine.

The Lead-Free Projectile thread has a lot of data, including terminal performance testing with the LFPs.

The Grendel Handbooks also have load data for 100gr TTSX.

Good powders for it to get the most velocity are:

H335
AA2520
8208XBR
CFE223
LEVERevolution

Western Powders and Barnes data for A2460 is different, with Western being more conservative for their max charge at 28.8gr under the 100gr TTSX at 51,228psi, whereas Barnes lists 30.3gr compressed.

I would lean on AA2520, CFE223, LVR, or H335. If you get the 100gr TTSX up to 2700fps, it will give you expansion out to 275-300yds.

The Maker T-Rex bullets are designed to expand to a much lower impact velocity threshold, so I would steer in that direction if you’ll be shooting out to 300yds.

For most of your typical distances inside 200yds, they both will expand. 100gr TTSX is known for reliable pass-throughs on broadside shots. Makers are known for full expansion in the Grendel velocity envelope.

I have historically used 100 ttsx for hunting whitetail. Always used XBR without any issues. Built a new Sbr upper with a lilja barrel from Remmy and wanted to switch over the 95 TREX. I ran out of XBR and tried using TAC for my TREX. Did a test recently with 29.5, 30, and 30.5 grains of TAC to see if I had any signs of pressure. Loaded them to 2.253 OAL and all of them grouped horribly. Threw some factory 123 SST in to check since it is anew build and it shot MOA at 100 yards. Never had anything group so bad from any initial test. Might try backing down to 28 and work up from there or move on to CFE223. I have some H322 left, but not very much. Don’t have a lot of time to shoot and test. Needless to say I was a little disappointed with the initial outcome. Hope you have better luck with the TREX.

Yes you can use the 100 gr Barnes ttsx load data and work up. Let me know what works for you.

I have CFE-223, it's good in my 7mm-08 but I don't see any 100gr TTSX for it in the Barnes reloading data. I picked up some A-2460, it has load data for 100gr TTSX so I'll try that first with 95gr T-Rex.

If you see AA2520 data, then it’s fairly safe to say that CFE-223 will work as well, but the charge weights will be higher for CFE-223 to generate the same pressures.

I’ve loaded up to 32.5gr of CFE-223 under the 100gr TTSX.

From a 17.6” Lilja barrel in the AR-15, I got:

Hornady brass 1x set back .006”
Rem 7 1/2 SRP

31.3 2598fps
31.6 2599
31.9 2642
32.2 2673
32.5 2646

I stopped after seeing the velocity drop like that. I never resisted that combo, but CFE-223 is very forgiving in 6.5 Grendel, even under a copper solid.

I also loaded it up under custom-cut 94gr GMXs with 33.9gr with 1x Hornady brass:

2749fps
2751
2741
2700

A-2460 is a great powder for 100gr cup and core, but I would cautiously approach the Western Powder max load for it under the 100gr TTSX. The Barnes max load with it is much higher than Western Powders, and Western provided pressure data along with it that was over 51,000psi. Barnes data was 1.5gr higher than that, so I’m not sure what pressure test breech they were using or how they came up with that other than a combo of lot variations and different brass. Hornady and Lapua brass have very similar case capacities though.

I am assuming this is a AR Grendel. I would start around 28.5 grains of CFE 223 and work your way up. This is the mid range for a 123 gr copper jacket and extreme low range for a 95 grain copper jacket bullet according to Hornady. I would start being more diligent in the 30.5-31 grain range. Personally, I do not load very hot in a auto-loader. I am sure you know that every gun is different . I won’t have more time to test until this fall. If you live in an extreme swing temp area, just remember CFE will be impacted by it. Let me know how it turns out. If I can manage some time to get out, I will do the same. I am glad to see you have a 7mm-08. It is a great round under-rated round. Had one a couple decades ago and loved it.

I'm loading for a Howa 1500 bolt action.
