I have big thumbs and fingers, the narrow action slot would seem to make top loading harder. Am I right?

Yeah it can be troublesome. Using a picatinny rail makes it nearly impossible to load from the top as well.

The CZ 527 mag conversion works great, if you already have the mags. Mags are getting harder to find since CZ discontinued the 527 line.

I went to Talley lightweight ringmounts. this leaves more room to top load than a pic rail does. Still a bit tight though. but does work to topload.

I just picked up HPK’s bottom metal in 223 for another Howa. Very nice and easy to install. It defenitely give the rifle a cleaner set of lines.

I don't care much for protruding magazines.I'm also a fan of the hinged floor plate design, although I too find it difficult to top feed. The action is a little too small for my big thumb
If I'm just shooting from the bench , I single load. If I want to load the magazine, I flip the rifle over and drop five rounds into the open floor plate.
