Scout Rifle AR build

Looking for help on my AR build that is as close to Lt. Jeff Cooper's Scout rifle concept as possible. While I have found everything that I need to make it I am missing the mark on weight. Sadly two areas that I am running into extremely limited option are the Buttstock and the fore end. In both instances I have only found one manufacturer option that makes either one. The FAB Defense buttstock and the BLK LBL Bipod are those items.

In my rabbit hole of a search I have not yet uncovered any lighter alternatives to either of these that fit the requirements set forth in the concept build. Thus far my only deviation that I am allowing is the caliber and I am choosing the 6.5 Grendel.

Does anyone know of alternatives to either of items in question that I simiply have not found? At this point cost doesn't matter as I understand that the build is going to be very pricey and I am fully expecting an expensive rifle.

Are you building a bolt action or AR-15 semi auto? Jeff Cooper Scout rifles were bolt action where the concept was produced by Steyr Scout Rifle and Ruger Scout rifle.

Are you intending to mount a scout scope on the handguard?

It will be an AR build. Cooper was not opposed to Semi-Auto rifles but acknowledged tge limitations in weight with that kind of weapon.

Planning on mounting one but not specifically a forward-mounted position due to not using stripper clips.

When you try to adhere to the weight limit on a .308 gas gun, it becomes unmanageable due to torque. That’s why so many people are having reliability issues with the POF Rogues, Revolutions, and the new SFAR.

For a 7lb total package with optics, you need a lot of lightweight components and a lesser torque-inducing cartridge in a gasser.

You want the FAB stock due to the spare magazine carrier like the Steyr and the Black Label AR-15 integral Handguard/Bipod combo I take it.



The 14” Black Label is 24oz, which leaves you 88oz.

Not sure what the weight of the FAB Defense stock is.

You might have to go 2A Palouse Lite receivers (13.1oz) or Balios-Lite (12.3oz).

Proof CF wrap barrel or pencil barrel. Proof will hold up to longer strings of fire and not wander like a pencil barrel.

Proof makes an 18” RLGS Grendel barrel, 29oz.

The Fab Defense weights just over a pound. 1.01 or something from my kitchen scale. I will take a look at those receivers. The Proof barrels were already on my radar as an option.

One thing I’ve found is that when you chase an arbitrary weight limit without taking balance into consideration and the reliability of the operating system, you can achieve the arbitrary goal and not have a firearm that feels very good to shoot.

I will say though that a buddy of mine built a 20” Proof Grendel on Seekins billet receivers, suppressed, topped with Leupold Mk 5 3.6-18x and supported by an ATLAS Bipod, and that set-up still weighed at around or under 8lbs, is very handy and maneuverable.

I like a rifle or carbine that when you pick it up from the pistol grip alone, you feel like you have total control over it with one hand and can easily point it, bring it into presentation, and hold it comfortably.

This really helps with natural point of aim.
