Converting right hand to left hand charging

Hello Everyone, a friend of mine would like to convert his right hand charging AR-15 to left hand charging. Obviously it will require a new left charge upper receiver, but are there other parts which will need to be changed as well? Specifically, I'm wondering about the bolt, extractor and carrier? Any other help or advise much appreciated. Thanks.

Since the current - typical - bolt is aligned to eject to the right, it will need a new bolt, a left-hand one (extractor and ejector are essentially swapped to opposite side). Don't know about the carrier, but seems to me it might need to be swapped out too, it is not symmetrical (back at the vent holes).
Alternatively there are some upper receivers that have a left-charging knob but still eject to the right... gibbz as I recall is one of them. Could be a couple other mfrs.
Radian and a couple others have left, right and ambi charging handles, so you can take your pick.

Maxim is the only source I’ve seen for left hand 6.5 Grendel bolts and Stag used to sell left hand eject upper receivers. I’ve never seen a requirement for a specific left hand bolt carrier. You might check Rainier Arms for a side charging upper receiver.

The carrier, bolt, and upper are the only parts differences that I’m aware of on the left-hand Stag receivers:





AR-15s with the brass deflector work quiet well for left-handers.

Left-handers have an advantage with bolt hold-open if their index fingers are long enough, and they use an ambiguous charge handle.

It’s easy to install a LH mag release as well, which makes the lower ambi mag release.

Since you only stated charging from the left (not ejecting to the left), you can go with different upper-bolt carrier or go with a standard set up like this..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdKnPgp5_-4

Not reading anything more into your query...If you want to charge from the left get an ambi charge handle. One solution that has been around for a while is the Radian Raptor. It also helps with scopes to be able to charge from either side with a finger and thumb, instead of coming over the top with two fingers.
