Hodgdon is discontinuing the IMR Enduron line?

Got this on another site from a small ammo supplier/manufacturer. Sid it came from his main powder source. Anyone else heard this. I have some Grendel loads that work well in my rifles with 4166.

These powders haven't around for long (2014) and Hodgdens were touting them as a 'replacement' powder for when you can't get the usuals. Enduron is not made by ADI but apart from that I cannot find who makes it.

Have you used it? They all look fairly slow and unsuitable for Grendel.

Hodgdon is just a packager and distributor. Someone probably outbid them. Hopefully that's the case - IMO too much market share in one company after picking up Accurate & Ramshot.

Based on the Safety Data Sheets, the Enduron line is made by General Dynamics in Quebec. By the way, it is usually possible to find the manufacturer of most powders by looking at the Safety Data Sheet (SDS), sometimes called the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), which has the emergency information for ingestion, eye contact, spills and disposal. The SDS's are required by law for most products that can be spilled, ingested, etc.

I'm curious what 4166 load you have that works well in Grendel. I was under the impression it's charge density was such so as to not be a great powder for Grendel (i.e. hard to get enough in there). I have some, so am curious.

As to the rumor, it might be true, as I've heard similar - but I have my doubts. The basis I heard was it had to do with REACH or chemical regulation or some such, with the ingredients. It sounded European driven to me, and I have some doubts if that really means no more US availability of those powders. I guess we'll see.

If made in Canada then the European Union won't have a say in it.

I read 4166 is similar to Varget and QL confirms it. Not the best choice but it'll work for some types of shooting.

I have 3 or 4 pounds, it works ok in .223, but then so do a dozen other powders

I use 4166 in 6.5 CM with light bullets. Not most optimal velocity, but good enough and gas operated guns really like it. Basically, it's usage appears close to 4064 - and so a bit bulky for Grendel - or so I thought.

Nosler lists IMR4166 as the most accurate powder when used with their 129-130gr bullets in the Grendel.

Does anyone know the density of 4166 vs Varget? I get 28.5 gr of Shooters World Precision in a Lapua case with a drop tube under a 123 Scenar and it fits. We determined a while back that SWP is about 3 - 3.5% denser than Varget which means that the 28.5 gr is about the same bulk as 27.5 of Varget

4166 = 1.580 gms/cubic cm
Varget = 1.600
SWP = 1.600

I bought some shortly after it came out and in the boltaction using 123gr SSTs was getting 2400 from it COAL worked at 2.285 and velocity was right at 2390fps with better ES, SD an accuracy than I ever got with Hornady factory SST ammo in my CZ527 with a 22 inch Obermeyer barrel. Went another way for the hunting ammo 129gr LRAB for that rifle but though slower than my CFE loads it was a nice option to shoot. There were a few hogs that died to it so IMO it worked well enough. 4166 is not what I would use all the time but sometimes it is good to have other options.

Interesting. It must be SWP's shorter cut vs. Varget.

On a separate note, I wonder if an Intellectual Property dispute is behind the scenes.

This is terrible news, I'm a big fan of 4166 in all my hunting loads. I use it for the temperature stabilizer. I have cold bore groups with perfect accuracy. 223, 556, 6.5 grendel, 7-08. Respectfully of course a 64gr TGK for both.224s, 95gr Vmax and the 150 TTSX. Of course. But this is what to expect from a monopoly.

JFYI, Powder Valley had the Enduron powders for a brief moment this afternoon. I just missed.
