Starting a new build

I am pretty stoked about this one. First bolt gun to go into the safe but I must say I am really amazed at the cost of the build. Not to far off from what I have in my Grendel. Biggest difference is obviously the cost of ammo and the glass that will go on it. And yes, I plan on doing my part to boost the economy. Even before I get to pull the trigger..... lol......

You could easily double or triple the $$$ you have in the Grendel; and that is before you go to the glass.. A good stock with cost upwards of a grand - have you looked at the cost of an Accuracy International stock?? I seem to remember it be well north of $1000..

What sort of action and barrel do you plan to use?? Is it going to be set up for hunting, or tactical??

I have about $3500 in my Grendel, excluding glass. The new build will be pretty close to that excluding glass as well. Got a 31" barrel coming from Obermeyer. That is going to be right at $500 not including threading, chamber work and crown. Action is a Stiller Tac338 with 20 moa base and Timney trigger. Cost is right at $1000. Still looking at stocks but will definitely be going with a chassis system. XLR, Mcree and AI are all about $1000 +/- a few bucks. Looking real hard at the AI 2.0 and the Mcree as I want to get away from the AR look. Currently waiting on a reply to verify if the Tac338 action will fit the AI chassis since it is just a touch bigger than a factory Remmington. That will more than likely make my case for which chassis I purchase.

Start adding the other little items like bi-pod, muzzle break, rings, machine work and getting the color where I want it, I figure it should come in close to that $3500 mark again if not a touch more. The glass is what is going to push it over the top. Looking at a USO SN-3 5x25 TPAL with all the trimmings. Best guess that is going to set me back another $3500+

Lucky for me I don't have a woman to answer to for my spending habits. This is my third build in less than a year. Just finished up my Grendel this past January and told myself I was going to take a break....... wrong. Got in on the Stiller group buy and it went down hill fast. lol.......

Mwilkins, I was thinking a nice 338 Lapua Mag. set up would go for around $3500 though they can go for double that again.. I think the Accuracy International in 338 Lapua Mag. is over 6k with all of the bells and whistles.. A very fine rifle indeed.. I had a buddy who kept telling me he was going to get one back 20 years ago when they were cheap at around 4k <grin>.. He never did..

I didn’t have to answer to my wife about my spending habits.. But then the bills were always paid on time and she could get just about anything she wanted to get.. In fact, there was more than one occasion when I came home with a new firearm, and upon seeing it, she claimed it as hers..

We separated earlier this year – I guess 20 years of me was all she could take <lol>.. But at least now, I get to keep my guns <vbg>.. flk k

My Barlein came in yesterday afternoon. Damn this thing is heavy. Still waiting on my primary barrel from Obermeyer but it should be in before long. Peices are finally starting to gather after long waits.

Another component was awaiting my arrival today at the house after work. My new muzzle break made it in. This thing is gonna make people anywhere close to me a hater!

LOL! Yeah, that's a pretty righteous brake!!! I don't expect recoil will be a problem...

This is a stainless break made by Allen Precision. Due to the size of my barrel (1" at the muzzle) it required the large break. There are medium and small breaks available with a 3 port configuration.
That is a 3.5" tile that the break is sitting on for reference.

That looks pretty sweet. I have a 6.5 remington ultramag at the smith right now getting finished. Then i will go to work on my 338 edge. But this looks awesome. Have you looked into a manners stock? Thats what i will be doing on my edge

bertrunner, I am going to go with a chassis system. Only a couple for me to choose from though. My action is a Stiller Tac338 so it is a touch bigger than the factory Remmington footprint. The new AI AX chassis will not support it. The AI 2.0 and 1.5 chassis require machining of the lug area to work but neither of them will support the 1.350" diameter barrel. I looked into Drake Associates but theirs is a no go along with several others. Looks like it is going to come down to either a Mcree or an XLR.

None of the "regular" stocks like B&C, McMillan and so forth really work for me. I have a small frame so my hands are small. Regular stocks make me feel like I am stretching to reach the trigger all the time and is rather uncomfortable. With the other chassis systems, they have more of an AR feel to them and fit me much better. Although I would like to get away from the AR "look" on this one, it may not happen.

Got a few more components coming in and once they hit the door, I will have to make my decision when my parts go to the smith to get properly fitted.
