Gentlemen, Warriors, and Vile Unwashed Masses of the Grendel Horde, we're gonna do 556N/223R AR15 barrels and I've already got a 5R 1:8 button being tooled for use with a 223Wylde chamber.
I'm interested in knowing what barrel length(s) you guys prefer. See poll. (Multiple choice OK.)

I like the longer lengths.
Partial to the extra oomph to the bullet.

Got a 24 bull barrel? .223 5.56 is competition use for me only. Grendel does the everything else

BFT, Are you planning to offer your muzzle flash hiders in 556 too? It would be nice to slide the .750 gas block off. Dave.

Close, but I'm planning the reverse. Thinking outside the box. Planning to have my 556/223 muzzles threaded 5/8x24 with the same muzzle profile as my 65G/6A barrels.
Unless you're using the old military M16 pencil barrel, more metal surrounding the muzzle with 5/8x24 makes more sense, technically speaking.
There's no muzzle device or suppressor worth having that isn't also offered in 5/8x24. The external dimensions are the same and performance remains the same.

I only build my (AR15's) .223 with a 26" HV barrel. These rifles I've built are strictly used for P. Dog hunting so I want them long and stiff. (I also built an AR .204 Ruger with a 26" pipe, but again, it's strictly use for hunting dogs out west.
What exactly are you intending on using this rifle for? That would help US make a selection for barrel length for YOU. Until then, I ain't makin' no stinkin' recommendation...

I gear my barrels toward the deer hunting and tactical crowd. They have what I'd call a medium-light profile, with metal where it's needed most around the chamber and tapering as you go toward the muzzle.

For me, it doesnt make much sense to do anything longer than 13.7/14.5 in 5.56, with a preference for 11.5-12.5.
Run the numbers and youll see there isnt really much advantage with the extra mv from longer pipes. The low BC bullets bleed energy so fast, that it just is marginal-at-best performance gained.
11.5 M193 5.56 spec loads are still averaging over 2800fps.
Book value gained from large data sets at Aberdeen for 14.5 M4 with 62gr M855 was 2920fps.
A bigger consideration is how to set it all up suppressed for me, and what that does to overall length.
They day you see me buy another 16 5.56, take note because there will have to be some overwhelming features on the rest of the rifle to justify that purchase (not gonna happen).
14.5 MLGS is a smooth-running set-up and the longest Im willing to go. Pin & Weld for 16 total length.
I do have several 16 carbines for DM use in courses as loaners/demo guns, already set-up with optics.
Youd be surprised at how fast a 12.5 5.56 shoots with 5.56 pressure ammunition.
