I need info on rebarreling a Howa Mini. I have a Howa mini and don't like it's performance and am going to rebarrel a 300bo 16.5 bull barrel. Who would I contact to do this or to order a barrel?

give your favorite barrel maker a call and decide on the barrel you want. (Brux, Bartlein, Kreiger, Lilja, Pac-Nor, Shilen,Hart, etc.)
ask your local gunsmith if he can rebarrel a howa mina action (metric). Sometimes the barrel makers are also setup to rebarrel bolt actions as well. ask. -tdbru

Depending on your stock clearance there are a couple of mfrs that make a "howage" barrel as a drop in, using a barrel nut like savage. Their website has the details, I forget which one it is, maybe shilen or mcgowan... or...

Who would I contact to do this or to order a barrel? Premium barrels makers are 6-12 months behind! Just got off the phone with Brux last week! Not all local gunsmiths will/like doing metric threads! Think, metric may cost more! Premium barrel + gunsmithing is going to be around $700+ depending on your local area. Wanting a 16.5 heavy barrel 300 BO, I would beat the bushes for a Ruger Ranch and call it good! Lets face it, its a 300 BO, not a 6mm Dasher! ![]() However, and with all due respect, switching from the Grendel, to a 300 BO is like breaking up with a Korean bikini model, to start kissing your sister! IMO! Good Lord! Is it too late to do an intervention?

The new ones are much better than when they first came out. Plus you can run any .223 AR mag in them. https://www.sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore....e-magazine

I like ruger predators, but not the ones with 223 mags. jmo
But it is an option. Criterion, Mcgowen and Preferred barrels all do a howa-mini-with-nut aka "howage" barrel, look at their websites/call/email for more info.

Looks like preferred barrel blanks can have one to me by July. A straight taper 1.06" threaded and lapped for $565. Some would say it's crazy but we'll see if I actually crazy enough to do it.
I may have been not fully explaining as it it a 300bo now but even after a cutback/recrown it is not accurate even at 25yrds. I have it in a LSS chassis and good tight/proven optics setup. I am also considering other calibers but need to stick to 223/300bo bolt face. It may just get shelved till I have more info. Maybe I'll sell my tricked out 700 in 223 and get a 223AI barrel. We'll just have to see what inspires me.

A caliber to look at that Ive recently been playing with is the 6mmx45. A 223 necked up to 6mm, reloading is ash as its just a pass in the sizer die, nothing crazy. And with 65gr bullets Im getting 3180fps, and with 85gr bullets Im getting around 2725 fps. Works well in an ar platform too

Going from 300BO to 223AI is like leaving a fat girl that doesn't want to have fun and starting a casual situation with a cute chick that's fun, at a lot of things. I know nothing about Korean bikini models, or kissing my sister, but Harpoon is on to something.

I have read several places that inaccurate 300BO rifles are more common that other calibers, although yours sounds worse than average. I remember that Savage refused to make them for several years, supposedly because they had accuracy difficulties. They make one now, so maybe they figured something out.

Your correct. My understanding is that a fast twist is really realty good for the 300bo. That's why I am considering a 1 in 5 twist barrel

That's why I am considering a 1 in 5 twist barrel Nodak, 1:5 is way too fast - bullets might even fly apart and you don't want that in a suppressor. Not sure 1:5 twist rate even exists in 30cal barrels. 1:7 or 1:8 is perfectly fine for heavy slow 30cal bullets. What is your current twist? .
03-22-2022, 10:14 PM
Actually the 1:5 twist is getting much more common for short subsonic 300bo setups. When you use a 190 plus grain bullets and push them slow they benefit from the fast twist.

When 300BLK first came out 1:8 was the standard, and then 1:7 with pistol gas became the norm. I have used both twists without issue and prefer 220gn bullets for subsonic (230 also work but are too expensive and hard to find). Group sizes are fine.
What is your twist rate?

I suggest you also take a look at the 300 HAM'R. I have been shooting 300BO for past +10 years in several different configurations and come to focus on its primary use as supersonic ammo. If you aren't really interested in subsonic, but would like a .30cal that is achieving the same velocities at Grendel. The 300HAM'R has an effective range 2x-3x that of 300BO and is approximately 400fps faster for any given bullet weight.
This is a link to the 96 page thread dedicated to the 300HAM'R: https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/ubbt...7506626/56

Klem Wrote:Nodak, Several companies are using 1/5 twist in 300 BLK, including SIG, on the short barrels. The shorter barrels dont spit out supersonics that fast, so they typically will stay under 300,000rpm. If you have a 16 300 BLK, then I definitely would stay away from 1/5 twist with supers because you will easily exceed 300,000rpm. A little 7.5-8 with 1/5 is optimized for subsonic, but will still spin 125gr supers at a max of 185,000rpm. It makes sense to have the twist rate correspond to the barrel length. I ran all the numbers through an RPM formula based on known 300 BLK velocities with different barrel lengths and bullet weights.
