Putin is kgb, is, was and always will be. Cold and ruthless.
And deprivation of rights has consequences, same as elections...
The Ukrainians (take note all ye basically "free" societies!) not having the RTKABA, ie, a 2A, now part of the consequences of an invasion of ruthless thugs comes evident: Putin, as part of his invasion's "fallout" to coin a phrase, now threatens to blow up the Ukr nuclear plant, thus blackmailing all of Europe. The first state-sanctioned dirty bomb of the 21st century.
And Jennifer-Baghdad-Bob Pzaki laughs that Putin only invades when "her boss" is in office...!!!

So, why would Putin want to pollute Russia with nuclear fallout by destroying a very big source of electrical power he can use for Russia? Wouldn't it be a lot easier to use a real nuke so you can place the radiation source somewhere where the winds won't blow it back on to Russia?
I will believe Putin made this threat when I see a video of him saying it. And that the video has been checked by numerous neutral authorities to make sure it wasn't faked.

Acting President Putin announces a new Russian security doctrine allowing Russia to use preemptive nuclear strike in time of war. Putin continues a priority initiative to assess Russian nuclear forces status, warhead stability, delivery systems number and status, unit morale, skills, training, enrichment facility capability, and overall review in the post Nunn-Lugar environment where the US and other nations propped up Russias, Ukraines, Kazakstans, and Belorussian economies in exchange for securing and dismantling much of the Soviet nuclear stockpiles.
February, 2004
Putin conducted nuclear exercises to assess rapid response and capabilities after his internal nuclear forces reforms. Dismal performance, numerous failures in communications, delivery systems, and personnel readiness caused an emergency overhaul initiative led by Putin to revitalize Russian nuclear forces.

Putins Kazakstan front company used to donate $31.3 million to the Clinton Foundation to help grease the Uranium One deal. The Clintons would receive at least $145 million in payments to the foundation while Hillary was SECSTATE under Obama.

START Nuclear Weapons Reduction Treaty signed by Russia and the U.S. Putin made a statement rationalizing the massacre of Polish Army officers by the Soviet Union at the start of World War II, explaining that Stalin was just reacting to a previous atrocity. Again Putin trying to rewrite history to put Stalin in a more favorable light, despite the fact that Stalin had murdered millions of the Russian people.

Renaissance Capital, a Russian investment bank with ties to the Kremlin and which was promoting Uranium One stock, paid Bill Clinton $500,000 for a speech in Moscow shortly after the Rosatom acquisition of Uranium One was announced.

Russian mole sleeper agents of a Russian ring of spies were arrested in the U.S.. These sleepers were connected with a confession of the FSB defector Colonel Stanislav Lunev who testified before Congress In a Congressional hearing in Jan 2000 that Russia placed small briefcase-sized nuclear devices in different US and European Cities. The FSB smuggled the small atomic devices into the United States and Europe, awaiting a future date when they will be used by Russian operatives already in the USA and Europe.
Summer, 2014
Let me remind you that Russia is one of the worlds biggest nuclear powers, Putin told Russian youth. These are not just words this is the reality. Whats more, we are strengthening our nuclear deterrent capability and developing our armed forces.
November, 2015
Russia test-fired nuclear ballistic missiles. Russian ministry of defense press release stated they were testing the reliability of relaying combat-training orders and signals along the entire command and control vertical, from the Russian national defense control center to the command posts of formations and military units.

I could see Ukraine destroying one of their own nuclear power plants in a false flag operation being more probable in the hope of getting NATO's direct military involvement than any tactical advantage it would give Russia ..A destroyed nuclear power plant would create more problems than solve for the Russians .. I'm not saying Ukraine would do this, but I agree this would not be in Russia's best interest..
Yep, lessons to be learned watching Ukraine. I have paid attention and I have purchased some inexpensive rifles and pistols and accompanying ammo as investments.... because there is likely to come a time where those items will be worth more than Gold.
Unfortunately, we may end up fighting ourselves. You know.... all those rumors that CW2 is soon to happen. Tell ya, watch the Repub's sweep the midterms and then watch Trump get re-elected in 2024 and the Left is highly likely to start firing bullets, burning things and blowing up things.
As for other countries..... There isn't a country on the planet that has any desire to invade America. They all know their soldiers would be fighting for their lives against a Militia of 100 Million, strongly armed marksmen.
Whether the threat against the nuclear plant is real or implied or perhaps made up, I am not sure right now; I certainly would not put it past him. And I'd need to see some confirmation too: it seemed to be the case this morning but now (afternoon) it's not so clear. But I wouldn't put it past him. I don't think we're dealing with a rational person here. Only thing matters to him is total submission of Ukraine and hands-ff and staying scared of all other nations.
He's not stopping with Ukraine, that's IMO. I think he wants to re-establish the whole old-soviet-sphere/russian empire land mass thing.

Latest update on the plant (1600 EST) is that there was a strike on a building, but it was a training building, IAEA reports that radiation levels remain normal. So that's good news so far.

Montana, thanks for the video link I subscribed. Excellent well-balanced analysis "A Tale of Two Douchebags" that clearly shows how oil and pipelines and port access and water rights fit into all this. Guys, let me preface this by saying Im not trying to be subtractively-argumentative. Its just painful to see people make statements and videos about things they arent even remotely familiar with.
I see this as an example of someone who literally doesnt even know the basic geography of the area, let alone any of the important events, after doing a deep dive.
If youre looking for a clean and tidy box you can wrap this subject up with, it just isnt going to be possible.
For starters, Russia didnt cave in and acquiesce to Ukrainian demands on being able to continue pumping oil through Ukraine.
Russia owned the puppet presidents of Ukraine up until 2014, and all the oil barons made out like fat cats while Ukrainian people got the shaft.
They had a famous gas dispute in 2009 where Russia turned off the gas to Ukraine in the middle of the winter (January 1st, 2009) as a way to bully Ukraine into submission. I was in Russia from late 2008-early 2009 when that all went down. It was big news in Europe at the time. In the Russian propaganda news, it was those dirty Ukrainians who didnt pay their bills. In the European news, it was grandmas freezing in Ukraine. There was a big deal in EU over it, because the Germans and other Central Europeans were worried about where they were going to get their heating from that winter.
Yanukovych signed onto the Russian Economic union with CIS states (many of the former Soviet Union), moving Ukraine away from where they wanted to go with closer ties to the EU, while 79% of the Ukrainian people wanted more trade with the EU and to decouple from Russia so they wouldnt be under Russian control anymore.
Yanukovych also bent over for Putin on Crimea, energy deals, sea ports, and almost anything Putin wanted. He even tried to push the Russian language as officially-recognized in Ukraine, which is a hot button issue with Ukrainians and vehemently opposed by the majority.
The voters literally threw Yanukovych out with 4 months of protest with Euromaiden, and Russian Spetnaz evacuated him through Kharkiv, from where he fled to Russia back to Putin.
If you really want to become informed on what is going on there, you will need to study:
Detailed geography of the region for starters. I recommend seterra online geography games, private intelligence satellite imagery if youre interested in the order of battle of the current invasion, roads, Dneiper and Dneister rivers, the arable farmland, sea ports, granaries, oil routes, etc.
900 years of Kievan Rus and Muscovite Prince rivalry
You are not being argumentative LRRP52 and I will not question your information. So, what is your bottom line? If you were the U.S. president, what should the U.S. do or not do in response to the current situation, and why?
To oversimplify, do you consider one to be the "good guy" and the other to be the "bad guy"?
Therein lies the problem. Our current Resident of the WH has been on the Soviet and Russian payroll since no later than 1972, but more likely 1968. The recent examples that have spilled out into the open with Hunter and James are just the latest escapades of the crack-fiend bagman family intermediaries who stumble around the worlds stage like Chris Farley in Tommy Boy, only worse. Chris Farley was far smarter.
Notice how Putin had to refrain from overt invasion tactics prior to Biden, but now is free to do whatever he wants in Ukraine.
A lot of this has to do with energy policy, and the first move Biden made was killing Keystone and banning drilling permits for 60 days as a favor for Putin.
If we had a legitimate President with genuine interest in representing the US first, not selling out to those who compromised him decades ago to enrich his imbecile family, there are a number of moves you could make as a chess-player.
The long-term problem you face at that level is that if you deal economic blows to Russia and destabilize Russia, were back to a Nunn-Lugar/Yeltsin era where we worry about who they sell their nukes to as the economy goes into freefall.
If you had a short-term reactionary and aggressive mindset with war hawkish tendencies, you could leverage mercenary forces like Putin did in Syria with Wagner Group, but have them force-multiplied with drones.
That 40 mile long Russian convoy could easily be turned into a highway of death once you bottle up the head and tail, then drone-strike it every night with incendiary and cluster munitions designed to ignite light-skinned vehicles.
You could also announce our new plan on Cuba, where we stand with the Cuban people in arresting and hanging all the communists in war tribunals, then incorporate the Cuban Caribbean paradise into the US economy once again, with a massive real estate opportunity for Cubans and people in the region. Ban all Russians and Chinese or any CIS members from the island as policy since they have instituted the crimes against humanity on Cuban people for 63 years.
It sure would be awful if things started blowing up in Kaliningrad, which isnt and never was part of Russia. The whole assertion is quite the farce, and clearly an attack vector for future crimes against Europe.
Russian submarines also have a habit of not resurfacing.
This only works if you have US oil/NG production like we did from 2017-2020 though.
You could do all of this and claim with a straight face like Putin has that we have nothing to do with it. Take a few power pieces off the board he thought he had, then atrit the Russian Army and VVS invasion forces to an unaffordable level that depletes their expeditionary force projection capacity and thereby delays or denies the future plans Putin has for the Baltics, Poland, Romania, and Finland.
But since we have Russian and Chicom Putin puppets in the WH, SECDF, DoD, Senate, and House, none of the above will happen.
The other place to look though is China and how they will benefit from all of this. Right now, theyre negotiating discounted oil and wheat from Russia and the ready-to-ship millions of metric tons of grain sitting at the docks on the ports of Ukraine.
A penny for a measure of wheat and a penny for three measures of barley, and see though hurt not the oil or the wine.....

Maybe not in Ukraine. But... and I'm not saying this to make a serious point or anything, I just find it interesting....
My fiance grew up in Russia during the last years of the Soviet era, in a city in the NW of Siberia. She's mentioned a couple of times that her high school had a basement armory that was stocked with AKs of one type or another. All the student there were required to take some kind of weapons training. At the very least, they had to learn how to strip down and reassemble an AK-47 (or 74, I'm not sure what they had), even the girls. That's sure as heck more than we get in the US.
Article claims Soviet kids were trained in emergency medical treatments, how to perform guard duty, methods of anti-tank warfare, etc. You could argue that this is a propaganda web site, so take a bit of that with a grain of salt. Hard to say how widespread that that advanced stuff actually was. But nobody can deny that Soviet Russia (if not the rest of the SSR) was a paranoid government, paranoid society. Very distrustful all other nations.
Here are some interesting pics from the article. I just showed these to her and she laughed. Said, "Yep! Yep! That was us! Talking apart our AK-47s." Except I guess, the workbenches at her school for doing this were much more crude than the nice classrooms shown in the pics.

Does make me wonder if maybe we ought to have a couple of stingers/javelins available in each county. Some kind of local arsenal, controlled by local citizen defense group. Like Bunker Hill was back in the Rev.

SD,
Growing up, my school had an armory behind the sports-master's office. It housed a bunch of SMLE.303 rifles, two Bren light machine guns, and two 2" mortars (no ammunition). The school's Army cadets shot the rifles every fortnight at the local range, and very occasionally the proper Army would supervise use of the heavier weapons at an artillery range three hours north. And no-one, including the wider community thought anything of it.
That didn't last however as society changed and the weapons were transferred back to the regular Army. The cadets shot rifles less often and eventually not at all.
