Custom bolt action

So I’ve been kicking around how only CZ, Ruger and howa make bolt actions 6.5 Grendel’s. I’ve also seen savage roll out a 110 tactical in 6mm arc. So it got me to thinking about building a custom bolt action that’s exactly what I want. Rugers are too rough of an action for me, Cz doesn’t have many options and thinks like their scope rings kinda suck as well as stock options. Howa is just there. So if a fella could get a savage chambered in 6mm arc it could be rebarreled to 6mm Grendel without much hassle. But mainly what I’m thinking of building is this.
Bighorn origin action because of the interchangeable bolt faces and they take savage style prefits.
Barrel I was thinking about a spiral fluted stainless from x caliber because they are one of the the few people that make prefit barrels that has a 6.5 reamer and will do it according to the website

If possible I’d really like a hinged floor plate

And some kind of traditional style stock instead of a chassis, maybe a nicer wood one if I could find it otherwise just a nice fiberglass or carbon fiber stock.

Has anybody built anything close? Any recommendations? Or just tell me what you built and why, maybe you thought of something I didn’t

There have been a couple of builds using Savage Actions by forum members. Here is a link to the google custom search feature where you can find post regarding Savage actions/builds. Hopefully other members will chime in but I think your plan is doable.

I know the current Savage 6 ARC bolt actions use a magazine and the feeding has always been an issue with Savage builds in 6.5 Grendel. With the 6 ARC there is now a magazine available with the three round flush fit or 12 round from the Savage 110 Tactical 6 MM ARC.

I know there are internal magazine designs with flush floor plate bottom metal for the Howa 6.5 Grendel by Jefferson Outdoors and Oregon gun smithing.


I don’t know if there is an internal mag with bottom metal and flush fitting floor plate for a Savage action.

Looks like two of the three Savage 6 ARC are in stock and hard to say when the Tactical will be back in stock.

I am about to start a build with a Bighorn/Zermatt Origin and Criterion Savage pre-fit (nitrided). It will use AICS mags with Primal Rights conversion kits and/or the newer MDT 12-rounders.

But if I were going to go with a hinged floor plate, I would stick with my Howa mini-action, and buy the bottom metal from Oregunsmithing, along with one of their lightweight stocks. I don't know of any other floorplate options currently available. Jefferson Outdoor was also making one but appears to have stopped. Maybe someone lese here knows about other options.

I would not go with a Savage rifle and then swap the barrel. (Just me, not saying there is anything wrong with them. I just wouldn't want the replaced original barrel sitting around.)

What are you willing to spend? Do you want a lightweight hunting rifle or prissy range queen?

The CZ 527 has been discontinued.

You don’t like the Ruger, that leaves only the Howa as the only real inexpensive option. There’s a reason Howa and CZ built the Grendel on their Micro actions, because the stubby cased Grendel can be finicky to feed in standard short actions!

I’d start here, unless you really want to go all out and drop $4-5K! He’ll build you a lightweight composite “Hunter” on the reliable Howa action, with hinged bottom metal.

I took my mini howa std bbl (22") and put it in a Bell & Carlson sporter stock, added HokeyPokeyKid's (Jefferson outdoors) bottom metal and like the outcome. picture posted when I camo'd the scope and rings.

not that you can't proceed with the plan you have.

if you like building custom rifles, and i haven't looked into it, but SAKO use to make a pretty petite mini action for 222 Rem, 22PPC, etc. If you get a small mini SAKO rifle with the 22PPC bolt face you could rebarrel to 6.5 Grendel I would think and have a very very nice and unique little bolt gun in 6.5 Grendel.

I have an Origin action with PPC bolt head as well, Carbon 6 was running a sale and have one ordered. I want to try the MDT mags. Keeps us posted on your build

Kimber scales their actions to the cartridge class. I always wanted to send a Kimber 84 action to Kevin Weaver and have him rebarrel it and tweak the action/bolt face and make a truly lightweight custom Grendel. For the time being my Oregunsmithing modified Howa Mini gets it done at a shade under 6lbs.

For the record I have had a howa mini 20” heavy barrel and it was good and I currently have a 16” Cz but hate the stock and the way the barrel looks. The bell at the end for 5/8x24 threading looks so dumb to me. The sako idea is cool but I don’t know many gunsmiths that will work on them or CZs. Also I’m out in the deserts of west Texas and not even close to a Walmart much less a gunsmith so that’s why I was thinking a origin for the ease of barreling. I’ve had a remage before and swapped barrels out on it regular. I see northland shooter supply has a bunch of actions in stock right now too, really gets a fella thinking,,,

Don't forget Borden Custom actions. Their Rimrock is popular. He also offers an action scaled for 6PPC... so should be perfect for Grendel.
