EC Tuner Brake
#1
I follow the Eric Cortina Utube stuff and he recently put out a new barrel harmonic adjustable brake. Just thought I would see what everybody thinks of this brake. I noticed that the ports sure do resemble the shape of the Area419 Hellfire brake so maybe they are making it for him.

Not worth the money? Very closely copied from Browning design? Useless piece of crap? The greatest invention since sliced bread? Doesn't work or does work?

I am not familiar with the Browning design from the past as some of the commenters from the video made reference to in the comments below the videos so maybe someone that has experience with their design or has used one can chime in.

I am not in the market for this so this is not about me getting opinions to buy one. Just curious what everyone thinks.

Correction: He is shooting an AR10 in 6.5 Creedmoor with factory ammo in the videos.

Anyway the brakes are threaded 5/8x24 and come in 6.5 and 30cal sizes (both sizes can be used on the 6.5 Grendel) and a 1/2x28 adapter can be used to mount this on a barrel with 1/2x28 threads. Also I don't know how good the brake is at reducing recoil.

Here is a pic of the brake:

Here is where you can buy it from (they are backordered and will be offered in black at a later date):

I have a 20” Bear Creek barrel I’ll send him for free just to see how much that break can improve groupings! ??????

The brake part of the device probably works.

The Browning b.o.s.s. works, I have them on Browning 22-250, 308 win and 300 win mag. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQGI6HYs...=emb_title
The also make the boss cr (conventional recoil) no recoil reduction and no obnoxious blast to people near by. I use these as well.

I follow him too.

He has a vid where he quickly dialed in an AR10 platform to 1/2 MOA with factory ammo.

Mine just arrived. Will be a bit before I get to take it out to try it.

I lean towards it being legit. Follow his progress vids for availability he put his @$$ on the line for why delivery was going to be delayed = he didn’t like 1 minor thing about the first batch he received so he sent them back to get fixed to his liking.

Seems like someone with integrity and very concerned with quality over pumping out sales.

It will work ... I just wouldn't expect miracles.
personally, I don't really see the need for it on an AR style rifle like maybe on an F-class or purpose made Benchrest rifle.... different tools for different jobs in my opinion.
As a business for him it makes perfect sense ... tons of AR's being sold and things added to them like legos. ... the industry is on fire.... no reason to think that you couldn't adapt something from one platform to another hand have some level of impact and find buyers.

I also watched an F-Class John video using this brake and he says that the adjustment is from 0-24 on the brake and that you don't need to go any further than 24 as the next adjustments over 24 will just duplicate the first 24 notches.

Please keep us posted on your experiences with this brake newb.

Update, but didn’t get to test yet.

All loaded up, arrived to range on Friday, it was closed due to event not listed on their calendar.

It’s on my calendar to go to a diff range on 4/10, as long as work doesn’t last minute screw that up for me.

For purpose of round 1 with EC tuner brake I will use factory Hornady 123 gr ELD.

My untested theory, I expect to see reasonable tweak-ability with factory loaded ammo. I expect this to be the most beneficial use.

For a later round 2, I will check it vs hand loads to see if it offers any tuning value above what can be accomplished via seating depth tweaking.

Looks cool and in theory makes since.

But on the other hand, I would rather just have the must effective brake and tune my handloads to the barrels wants.

If your a factory ammo only type shooter, it does make sense but then again you will have too retune it every time you change ammo I'm thinking.

Looks like my update didn’t post up?

If delayed appearing, ammo was factory hornady123gr ELD

I guess my report didn’t post. Do my best to recap.

I need to figure out how to post pic via phone.

Factory 123 gr hornady ELD. 120 yds. 3,500 ft elevation, clear, about 70 deg, no wind.

Took 15 to 20 rds to dirty my barrel, warmed it some, shoot consistent. Likes to be dirty before it is consistent. Previously about a 1 MOA rifle on the old factory 123 AMAX.

Measured outside hole edge to further outside hole edge.

Tuner on, 0 dial, after dirty barrel about 2” group.

+2 on dial, 3 shots, 1 1/2”

+4 dial, 4 shots about 2”

+6 dial, 4 shots, 1 1/4” with 3 @ 3/4”

+8 dial, 4 shots 2 1/4”.

Barrel cooling 5 - 10 min while checking target and putting 2 more dots.

+6 dial, 4 shots, 1 1/2” with 2 in middle on top of each other

+8 dial, 3 shots, 2 1/2”

Need to recheck vs no tuner, give breaks between groups to keep barrel temp close, maybe run the chrono also.

So...... your bottom line is?
To me it doesn't look that effective from those results.

newb,

The benefit, if any, of a barrel tuner will be subtle. It requires all other variables to be held absolutely equal. Unfortunately, you are not going to see any meaningful results firing a handful of factory rounds out of an AR with a rack-grade barrel.

That's why AR users don't use them.

Looks like the +6 group had a flyer each time and the 3/4" isn't bad at all then I would try +5 and +7 just to see if that helps the group close up a little or not.

Thanks for updating your results.

Short story, we can consider this aspect = adding the brake increased group size. Tuning it brought group size back to about normal. So if a person wants a brake, it brakes as intended and has tuning ability to nullify the changed harmonic causing group size increase. For factory ammo shooters, it does provide a tool.

Long story, from what I saw it surely warrants more ammo, time, and comparisons.

JP 22” barrel, medium contour.

I was so focused on checking grouping I forgot about the brake function. After a few shots I was thinking it was shooting noticeably more smooth and tame than usual, it was very nice. Then it dawned on me, oh yeah, the brake. There is considerable reduction in recoil from usual. The brake feature meets objective.

The grouping.... this is the first time I have put anything on the end of this barrel aside a thread protector. I have an SJC brake I recently picked up that I can put on to check how it effects grouping due to harmonic changes.

I would also like to see what can be tuned in via in between the dial test points and going further out on the dial.

Seems as I dialed out, the nodes of peaks started to get bigger and valleys (small grouping) were trending smaller.

If I were to measure group size via more appropriate center to center, that 1 1/4” group would be 1”. That’s at 120 yds, sub MOA.... about MOA at the larger outside to outside measure.

(I typically measure outside because my preference to underrate)

newb,

I would be cautious concluding anything from what you have done so far. If all you have shot is four rounds at every increment then it only takes one stray round - stray for some other reason, to confound any conclusion that starts to form. You mention one of those groups has a flyer and it is X MOA with the flyer, and it is X without. When you start to cut corners in recording data you only confound yourself. This is where the low number of shots highlights the lack of a reliable conclusion.

Measuring edge-to-edge, or centre-to-centre makes no difference as long as you are consistent when comparing all holes are the same diameter. It becomes muddy however when comparing across calibres and when sharing with us. The relative difference between groups does not need translation however.

The idea of choosing edge-to-edge to 'underrate' (relative to centre-to-centre) is of no practical use. Underrating or overrating anything when talking metrics is just spin on reality. Spin is nothing more than wishful thinking - a deliberate falsity.

The range, 120 yards is irrelevant when talking angles. Group sizes are angular measurements and will be the same at any range (all other influences being equal and discounting the effects of friction and gravity).

It is an interesting project. The only time I have seen a tuner outside .22 bench rest is shooting .308 F Class. The guy used it for several months before deciding it was useless - and we all agreed.

Tuner brakes can work, they have for me with the Browning B.O.S.S. system. Here is a pic of a Browning A-bolt 300 Win mag target results. Center target .570, Bottom Right .580 with Boss at 2.5 for both.

Klem..... buddy....

Reading too deep. This is a fly over, not a full under the microscope event at this time.

And I completely disagree with your outlook on my underrating / conservative measuring. If I say I caught a fish 15” long, you know you can count that I will produce a fish no less than 15”.... not fish story measured via the man-ruler (haha)

newby,

No need for the fish metaphor, I understand what you are doing and why - but in doing it you are selling your test short. There is enough quality of data for you to working in exact metrics, rather than in 'more than' or 'less than'.

Given the incremental differences in that tuner, if any, will be minute your testing is begging for precise measurements.
