Holy Eugene Stoner!!! I received my LaRue Ultimate Upper on Wednesday. This afternoon I tried to remove the brake that ships with the upper. I clamped it in my vise and could not budge it. I didn't get medieval on it but I did give it some effort. I've learned not to force expensive things, so I'm here in search of advice.
How do I get this off so I can put on my Dead Air brake/suppressor? Is it pinned? Welded? Rocksett?

first off, don't clamp the upper in the vice...
You need to use this if you're gonna put any legit torque on the end of the barrel

I used this one to save money... ended up grinding flats on the sides so the vice would bite it

Not me, way too much torque on the barrel extention with a reaction rod when cranking on MDs. Made my own barrel clamp from oak 1×2s
(glued together to make each 1/2 2"×2") from Home Depot for ~$8ish. Just drill a hole 1/16" smaller ID than the muzzle OD through the middle of the 2 halves of the clamp. Add lots of heat gun to get the LT brake off.

I would not use any of those reaction rods that sit in the lugs of the barrel extension. The extension is only held to the barrel by 150lbs of torque and maybe the crush of the index pin into the threads, but usually not. Other forums have posters with experience unscrewing their barrel extensions off while trying to undo glued muzzle devices. It is also a long way from the muzzle to the barrel extension to be torqueing up the barrel.
I would isolate the torque as close to the muzzle as possible and use a barrel vise or barrel clamps. Or if I didn't have these make my own out of a couple of blocks of wood like AZHT is recommending.
I don't know for sure but it would likely be glued in place by Rocksett. I read soaking the muzzle overnight in water helps. Applying heat to it might help but Rocksett is designed to withstand heat, which is why they use it in the first place. I also read someone heating it up and tapping it with a hammer in a few places before applying force to remove. The common thread is applying a lot of effort with a wrench and breaker bar.

I bet LT used Rocksett or Loctite on the threads. Youll probably need heat and Kroil to get the brake loose. Cant hurt to call LaRue and see what they use on their muzzle brakes.

I should have mentioned that I used a barrel block on the barrel. No stress/torque at all on the upper.

Soaking the barrel overnight in water seems to be popular. I'll try that. Will report back...

They use loctite. Needs heat.

Soaking in water did not work. I'll heat it up later and see what happens. I also bit the bullet and emailed LaRue to ask for help.
At this point I think it would be better to just buy a suppressor from LaRue that fits the brake!

I pulled mine off using a Harbor Freight heat gun. Didnt heat it for too long and it spun off after not being able to make it move.

I finally got it off! I tried a heat gun and it didn't help. I then used my mini torch (think creme brulee sized) and it finally, reluctantly, loosened.
Anyone want an unused TranQuilo brake? PM me if interested.
