Any consensus on best barrel break-in procedure?

Just thought I'd ask. Referring to the current generation of Monster barrel. Never had a nitrided barrel before (on a rifle) nor one with this type of rifling. Didn't see anything about it on the sixfive web site and couldn't find anything in this sub forum.

Any words of wisdom to share?

It's a waste of time to "break in" a barrel that has been either nitrided or chrome lined. Both processes render the steel too hard for any break in to have an affect.

My uncle sold guns when I was growing up in the 70’s. He told new buyers to shoot 10 rounds and run a patch through it.Throughout my life I used many different break in methods on many different rifles.None made a difference.
I just take out the rifle and shoot it like I normally do. 50 rounds.Maybe one hundred.Then clean it when you get home. That’s what I did with my last two Bartlein barrels and the several other new barrels before that.

That's what I wondered, which is why I asked the question in the first place. How did no one else know this? I asked my question in November. I should have just googled it. The web's full of similar statements to yours.

In any case, thanks for replying TexHill. Confirmed my suspicion (voiced in post #1). I don't consider these 15 rounds wasted though. Had fun sighting in the scopes and hitting steel at 100 yards after that. I'll shoot for groups next time.

I'm with FL - I used to do it for F-Class competition using stainless match barrels. Then I stopped and it made no difference to anything. All that time and effort wasted.

It might take a couple of rounds to fill the micro pores with copper but as far as breaking them in, I just shoot them.

Normally I just shoot them. Maybe run a patch through after the first 10-20 rounds, then keep shooting. But the "break-in procedures" (my cleaning steps) only amount to about five minutes time all added together. I've wasted more time than that sitting at an intersection.

The subject is a moot point now anyway.
