6.5 Grendel build inspired by the military SPR Mk12

That's not good. I am headed there in a couple of weeks with an OTC bull tag. Hope it clears up, or the elk all might expire from lung cancer before I get there and make one of them expire from a dramatic drop in his blood pressure.

It SHOULD be cleared out by then but that's assuming no new fires... Good Luck!

I feel your pain but you're on your own. People can suggest but optics are a difficult choice. I have several but my favorite is an old Vortex 2.5-10 44mm SFP PST. Many wouldn't walk across the street for this old thing, but I love it. (To me) the perfect combination of weight and function for what I do.

The rifle looks stellar.

Then I sprang for this Nightforce NX8 2.5-20x50 scope:



When I hold it, it just seems heavier than I'd like for this rifle. It's 28.6 oz. which I don't believe is all that heavy for a 20X scope.

But, I'm having second thoughts..............

The hand guard I'm using is a 15" Geissele Mk 14:

I added a low profile Arisaka 3-slot pic rail for an Atlas bipod:

M-loc mounting screws had to be shortened to clear the gas block:

Damned cool build overall. Puts mine to shame. LOL

Thought I'd comment because I ran into a similar problem with my setup. With mine it was Keymod screws, but same-same. My rail handguard is a BCM 15" KMR Alpha. The Pic section is a longer BCM 3-point attachment. Middle screw hit the gas block. So I just left out that problematic middle keymod attachment. I should have shortened the screw, but two attachments points on the ends seemed like plenty.

Thanks SDW. From the partial picture it looks like a very cool build. I like the color and the flash hider too.

I'm still waffling on my APA comp or perhaps a flash hider/comp combo like the SureFire WarComp.....

I was also waffling between my 1-8X or 2.5-20X scopes. Is it too much scope? Is it too heavy (28 oz)? Blah blah blah...........Then I finally told myself, "both scopes are on the same style Larue SPR QD mounts so just put one on the rifle dummy!"

Then I ran into another clearance issue:



That's the red dot sight base hitting the scope in 2 places. It's shown just sitting on top of the scope ring mount and is about a 1/8" from the screw mounting holes lining up. I guess that's why power sanders were invented:

Gonna say, that's the kind of thing I would do (and have done)---Just shave it a little. 'Cept I would need use my ancient little Dremel and 1.25" disk, and take a rougher guess at the angle to bevel it. Hah.

I ground a little bit off the bracket, checked the fit and adjusted the angles on the sander. It worked pretty good and looks clean, not all lumpy and uneven:



The raw anodized finish on the scope and mount are "dry" as a bone and look bad. When everything is assembled on the rifle I'll use a few drops of Break Free CLP on my fingers and work it into the finish. But first I used some Krylon flat black to touch up the corners of the mount.

Now the little red dot sight fit fine:





Now I'll try to get a decent picture of the rifle with scope...........

Once I've decided for sure (?) on my scope choice I'll look into camo coating or at least an FDE finish for it......

Man what a sweet looking build! I ended up going with the same Nightforce on my 6ARC build and think it's a perfect range for it. Go check it out on the 6ARC forum
