Long time shooter and reloader, play a bit in Wildcats. Have a grandson (8 years old) that wants to tag along with PaPa deer hunting. Researched cartridges for a youngster and decided to go the 6.5 Grendel route.
Came on here to read and learn, got him a Howa Mini at a decent price, and want to set it up to be functional for him for a while. Looking to restock and add better bottom metal.

Welcome to the horde, from down da bayou! Were glad to have you here. I think youre gonna find the Grendel will put a smile on your grandsons face... and yours. Im not familiar with the Howa mini, others here can help ya out with it.

Welcome to the clan, Wm, from the great nation of Texas! There are many of us here across these pages with Mini's. It is an excellent choice. I put a Boyd's At-One on mine, not necessarily the best choice - added a significant amount of weight and had to do a fair amount of re-shapping to make it comfortable. However, I put a Boyds Thumbhole on a Ruger 6mmCM and love it! Very lightweight and comfortable. Add a good muzzle break and scope and your grandson will enjoy it for many years. Put together a Grendel for my younger grandson and I can't find enough ammo to keep him fed! There are a number of threads across these pages about the Howa with a lot of setup and "my best load" info, Keep us posted with pix and "there we were...." stories.

Welcome to the forum Worriedman! Howa sells the Howa Mini Action with youth stocks. You might find a takeoff but Id be surprised if Boyds or other manufacturer produce a youth stock.

Grandson is of slight build but very athletic for his age. The standard measurement from crook of elbow to crooked finger is 8.5.
I am considering a LSS Gen2 Pistol Chassis to replace the current plastic stock. Could one cut down a buffer tube and fit a minimal stock to get the needed length that way?

Unless you SBR it with a stamp I think youll need to use an unmodified pistol brace. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can chime in. With a 20 or 22 Howa Mini you could probably shorten a youth rifle length stock and still be long enough to meet the criteria for a rifle. Only disadvantage is the stock will only fit him a short time. If you buy a chassis for a Howa rifle you could use a fully collapsed AR-15 stock and maybe cut the Howa barrel back to 16.25-18 to make it more manageable.
Hopefully someone who has had this issue will chime in.
