Hello from Southeastern WI

Hi guys,

Just wanted to say 'hello'. New member here that probably comes from a pretty 'different' background than most of you. I've been an avid shooter most of my life (since middle school)-but primarily via high end air rifles (in the 80's and 90's it was the stuff that Robert Beeman imported). Anyway, I've currently gone from my Rapid Air Weapons (RAW) HM1000X in .25/.30 caliber (interchangeable barrels) to a CZ 457 .22 MTR that I've really been enjoying (used to own an Anschutz 2013 BR-50, years ago-that was my only other 'real firearm'). More recently, I've 'taken the opportunity' to pick up a H&K VP9SK-which I never thought I would (have to) do-explanation probably not needed.

Shortly after I graduated from University, I enjoyed shooting 10m Air Rifle-still really miss that.

I've always thought about getting a 'real' gun so I've finally pulled the trigger on ordering a CZ 527 MTR in 6.5 Grendel (wife bought me 3 boxes of Hornady Black yesterday, on our anniversary and gave me permission to order the rifle-which I immediately did, LOL).

I live on 8.5 acres in SouthEastern WI and am blessed to have a 100 yard shooting range for air rifle / .22, along with a pistol / archery range (different area of the property). Thus, I'm able to enjoy shooting pretty much 'at will' right at home. Having said that, I don't plan to be able to shoot my new 6.5 G on my property.

Anyway, I look forward to learning as much as I can from this group and your experience. Not sure if I have many 'neighbors' on this forum-but I'd certainly love to learn all that I can as this is my first CF rifle I've ever owned.

I think you will find the 6.5 grendel addicting to pushing your limits for accuracy,... and will need to find a place to shoot 200 yards or longer.

Thanks! I currently live in Troy Center (West of East Troy). My sister in law lives a bit north of me in Sullivan-adjacent to a decent size farmland. I was just talking to them yesterday about setting up a 200 and 300 yard range once the crops are harvested (her significant other just picked up an AR15). They have at least 330-400 yards of flat space before hitting the tree line. He was very interested in doing that with me, so it looks like I can stretch my legs a bit fairly soon. I'll probably mount the Athlon Ares ETR scope from my .22 on the 6.5 G until I can afford to buy a second copy of that scope (or something else).

Goals? I just love shooting. I'm a trigger snob (having been exposed to several Anschutz triggers, FWB, Steyr Air Rifle, etc) and really enjoy target shooting. I also enjoy pest control and varmint shooting (was cleaning up Woodchucks with the .22 earlier this year; chipmunks, rabbits, squirrels with the RAW, etc). I wanted a gun that I could, 'theoretically' take out prairie doggin, as well as go deer hunting, and even dabble in shooting longer ranges (maybe out to 1000 yds). In short, I really like versatility.

Given our current political climate, I also didn't want to delay much longer to make a purchase as one doesn't really know how much things can change in a year. If there's one thing that 2020 has probably taught us, its to not take anything for granted and don't assume life will continue the same a year from now as we know it at this time. So again-the 6.5 G seems to be a versatile tool for doing many things. When I learned about the ballistics-especially the advantages over the 5.56/.223-I was really drawn to it. I didn't want to go up to a 6.5 Creedmoor as I just thought it was a bit too much gun for what I was looking to do with it.

Being a bit of a nerd (Mechanical Eng), I do really get into the ballistics side of shooting as well. I've done a lot of measurements on my air rifle projectiles (pellets and slugs), as well as the .22lr ammo that I shoot. I have ballistic dope cards on each rifle I own-and expect to follow that practice when I receive my 527 MTR.

Welcome to the forum smh77! Pretty country in your part of Wisconsin. If you really think you might shoot out to 1000 yards you might consider a Dip Inc. 25 MOA mount. Many scopes run out of elevation adjustments around 800 yards. The 25 MOA canted rail permits the use of regular scope rings instead of Cz specific rings. I have a Cz 527 American and I used the Dip mount on my 6.5 Grendel Cz 527.

Thanks for the information-I was actually looking at that exact rail and am glad you brought that up. I plan to get that unit, but they are backordered at the moment. Is there anyone else that may have them in stock?

Also, on the 527 actions: can I replace the bolt handle (like I was able to on my 457 MTR) for a larger one, to make cycling the bolt a little easier?

I just saw my status changed for shipping to 'shipping today'! The gun should be at my FFL on Thursday evening so I'd love to get a rail on the way as well. I already found snap caps so I can dry fire (safely).

Anyone use a muzzle brake on these guns? How is the recoil compared to a .22lr or a .223 AR15 (I have shot both recently)? I'm guessing it's more than the .22 lr and similar to the .223?

I found where Kenny’s sell the Dip Cz 527 25 MOA Mount. I’ve never ordered from them but looks like it is in stock. Maybe someone else knows but all I have seen for tactical/larger bolt handles are custom. I don’t ever remember seeing an off the shelf tactical knob. If you had a machinist thread your existing bolt handle I think you can buy the larger knob.

Well guys, I'm officially a 'member' now! Just picked up my CZ 527 MTR in 6.5 Grendel yesterday-super excited! Today I received my Harbour Arms snap caps so I can dry fire (trigger's set up decent as it is-there's a small amount of creep, but not too bad).

So today I had to get on the ball and order the following:

1.) DIP 25 MOA Picatinney scope rail
2.) Area 419 Oversized Bolt knob (same as on my CZ 457 MTR)
3.) Area 419 Under Forearm 'improved' Picatinney Rail to mount my Atlas Bipod

Once I get those, I should be able to mount my Athlon Ares ETR and go test it out!
