scope mount

Need suggestions for scope mount on AR platform...have Nikon 3-9x40, running YHM BUIS, scope when mounted is touching folded down rear sight... Thx...

You really need to look at the specification on the center of the scope tube above the 1913 rail. One of the higher one piece scope mounts I own is a Rock River Arms one piece mount. A lot of 1” inch scope mounts put the center of the scope about 1.5” above the 1913 rail. The RRA mount puts the center of the 1” tube at 1.685” above the 1913 rail. I know this mount will not work with most of my BUIS and for my 3-9X40 Leupold Mark AR I had to get a low profile BUIS to fit under this 3-9 scope.

What mount are you currently using? I have a Vortex 3-9x40 in a Burris pepr that clears my troy rear sight, and a Leupold 3-9x40 in a Midwest industries mount that also clears the troy folding rear sight. I will say, that the QD lever on the MI mount touches the BUIS, but it doesn't impede the function. I will upload pics in a minute

Your BUIS is dictating the scope and scope height on that rifle. What do you think might happen that you need a BUIS?

I would just ditch the buis and safe them for a build that didn't use a scooe that would be sitting over them.

Neither of those scopes actually belong on that upper, I took them both off of other rifles to use as examples.

Hey there buddy, I'm just trying to reply to the OP to answer his question and give him an example of what he might be looking for. What do I think might happen that I need BUIS on that rifle? absolutely nothing, but why does that make a difference to you? My BUIS is dictating the scope and scope height on that rifle? Is it, now? Allow me explain the context of those photos: neither of those optics actually belong on that upper. Neither of the rifles those scopes reside on have BUIS, I am simply trying to help someone with a question, not lambaste people over digital images I don't know the context of

If it helps, here is a picture of three sets of expensive Troy sights I took off my guns after coming to the realization I will never use them. For a long while they took up space and weight on the rifle for a scenario that will never happen. The only set left on a gun is with a red dot and only because I take the red dot off for use elsewhere and put it back on and check zero with the BUIS (co-witnessed). Truth be known I don't even need that but the sheer expense stops me from taking the last pair off (daft excuse I know).

Mate, I am just working through the logic here. Perhaps you can ask the question to yourself down the track when there is no-one to get emotional with.

Waste my money on your mistakes? I don't think so. The rifles I want back up sights on have them, the ones I don't, don't. You can take them down the track with you. Don't throw your back out, they look heavy. Since you appear to have more wisdom than you know what to do with, perhaps you could answer the OP's question, which was recommendations on scope mounts? Probably something that puts the centerline of the lens at about 1.5" above the picatinny rail?

Yes, but can you imagine all three sets on the same gun! Plus yours, and the scope. Flip those bad boys up and down in your bedroom and never be out of the fight...

To the OP, remove the BUIS and get the lowest mount you are comfortable with. AR sight axis sits 2.5" above the bore so you don't want them any higher; for the sake of canting and something you will never use.

I had a similar issue with some Aero Precision backup sights. They were too tall while folded down to fit below my 1-4x SWFA. So I swapped them out for Magpul MBUS and put the Aero irons on my AR Pistol with Red Dot, where they would be out of the way.
OP - your options are:
1) switch your rear sight to a lower profile option (Magpul MBUS is pretty low for what it's worth)
2) buy a taller scope mount
3) ditch the backup irons altogether
