May be what the gov. order called for. San Tan tactical uses the 18" 0n their rifle. I wonder what the gov. contract mag is? San Tac shows a Pmag 30 rd in the pictures. Must be just for looks.

Interesting - the Proof 16" barrel is an RLGS and the 18" is R+1.

Yea because we all know that 6.5 grendels suck in short barrels too lol. Without testing by owners, there is no way at this time to know if it will flop in short barrels. But then again nobody can keep short 6.5mm grendel barrels instock and we can proof they do much better then expected, so yea my first 6mm ARC is going to be a 12 inch.

Just talked to a tech guy at Forster he said the 6ARC dies are on the radar. Asked for my name to count as a show of interest for the dies. Probably would help if the horde let it be known we would like to see them make the dies...

It was interesting that the primary design impetus was for the military requirement side. Also that the 6.5 Grendel almost got there.
BFT any estimates on when a Monster ARC will be available and at what price?

Looking at the BA's, be real careful jumping in folks - the 16 and 18 have an MLGS and I have timing issues with my 18" 243 LBC with 95s with an MLGS- which would only be worse with heavier bullets. From personal experience with Proof putting my 6.5 Creedmore together, they are very focussed on gas system function and would look at what they are doing.

Gas port on the 18" BHW is fine but if definately tries to unlock early and I have broken an extractor. The load I developed was fine and is very reasonable given 6mm PPC and 6 BR Rem data, but I started getting extractor marks. Shut off the gas and they went away, so the gas is hitting the bolt too early. The BA 20" is an RLGS - but the Proof 18" is an R+1......

Also I'm guessing this is why Proof started with 16" and 18" offerings: https://news.barrett.net/2020/06/03/barr...to-us-dod/ Guns and ammo video said 2,700 fps out of their 20" barrel, Barrett says 2,630+ fps out of Proof 18" barrels.... All sounds pretty good to me.

I'm glad DoD can use that extra 5% or whatever to defeat barriers, etc. As a civilian shooter who wants a good general purpose AR15-sized rifle, I'm just not there yet in terms of giving up all my 6.5G handloading gear and affordable ammo to gain that extra little margin of performance. I'm also not very interested in a 14lb match rifle with a 24" barrel and a big scope on top. It does sound like the sweet spot for DoD is an 18" barrel, as Barrett seems to be contracted to supply the REC7 DI in that barrel length. |
