Just curious if anyone on here has experimented with imr4350 in the grendel. I use it in my 6.5 creed with the heavy pills but not often, looking to break a barrel in but dont want to burn a bunch of my dedicated grendel powder up.

i have not tried any because it is WAY TOO SLOW burning.

I realize its burn rate is slow but you know how reloaders are! I need a use for this pound of powder. Lol

I have IMR 4350 I load in my Creedmoor, but based on similar powders and burn rate charts, this would provide less than optimal velocities in Grendel. The power is also pretty bulky so I doubt you could cram much more than 27-30 grains in the case.

You have not been reloading long enough if you have not figured this dilemma out. NEW RIFLE TIME. IMR 4350 works real well in 06 size cases and is a pretty good powder for the 300 Win mag. (:}) LOL

Use factory ammo.

The problem with too slow powders for a particular cartridge is they don't always light-off so consistently. While not always the case, there can be the issue with some of those combinations of pretty high standard-deviations in velocity, and associated accuracy limitations - on top of the poor velocity.

That, and 6.5 CM burn-rate powders tend to be hard enough to come by reliably, that it's kind of a waste to burn them up in a sub-optimal combination like Grendel. Just my opinion.

Ask yourself the question: “Does a Grendel barrel REALY need a dedicated break in exercise?”

If the answer truly is “YES” and you want to use an oddball (for the Grendel) powder, then ask yourself the second question: “Will this introduce unusual safety issues.”

Velocity is not an issue if the goal is merely to send a bunch of bullets down range.

The biggest issue with 4350 is that the pressures will be low, even if one fills to the case mouth and compresses. Whether it will be low enough that significant unburned powder remains in the barrel remains to be seen.

Reported experiences with large cases and partial fills with slow powders might suggest that one should avoid initial loads that leave a significant unfilled volume.

Im actually surprised no one has tried it in the grendel with the heavy pills. They burn it in a few small bores with heavy pills, 224 valkyrie, 22 nosler, 22-250,6mm's just to name a few and of course in the bigger cals. I used it in my 22 nosler with 75 bthp and my creed. I think I will keep it set aside like lazyengineer said and grab some cheap factory ammo like A5 said.

Most people use H4350 in 6/6.5CM. IMR 4350 has a lower bulk density than the Hodgdon variant which means even less fits in a case.

I run 60 gr of IMR 4350 in my 270wsm with pretty stellar results. 140 gr SST running about 3030 fps. Shoots great groups and nice and flat.
