Wolf at Target Sports for 30 cents a round

Lots of places out of Wolf 6.5 and prices have been jacked up a lot from a lot of the places that have it. Got an email from Target Sports and they have it back in stock for 30 cents. 500 round box gets free shipping. Ordered two, best price I have seen in awhile.

I will assume this is Steel cased ammo. Have you had any problems using this ammo. I have an 18" Satern/Liberty Fluted barrel.

The Wolf/Barnual ammo functions fine in my AR-15’s but it averages about 3 MOA for me. My AR-15’s typically get fliers with the Wolf steel cased ammo. I might get a group which is around 1.5-2 MOA but the next group might be 3.5 MOA. I have a couple of Friends who have Saturn/Liberty barrels they get get the same performance with Wolf.

Thank you. Rumor has it that steel cased ammo will damage an AR 15. I was curious if the rifle would cycle properly, etc. I have quality ammo for hunting. Just want to use wolf for target shooting stuff. I see it on sale for 30 cents a round typical.

A properly built rifle should function fine with wolf.

My 2 grendels work just fine with Wolf. Accuracy is about 2-3 moa, but it feeds, extracts, and goes bang.

For us newbies. Verdict seems to say to expect 2-3 moa. I believe 2 moa at 100 yards is about 2 inches. I just purchased 2 - 20 round boxes of Wolf 100 grn FMJ steel case.
Is the accuracy of Wolf ammo due to the steel case, type of powder, type of bullet they load ?

From people who have pulled the 100 grain FMJ and replaced with a quality projectile like the 100 grain A-Max or ELD-M the major culprit is the bimetal jacketed bullet. The 100 grain FMJ uses a steel jacket with a copper wash or thin coating. Most Wolf/Barnual bullets measure .262. Whether the small diameter is used so the steel jacket can easily swage to the rifling or because of loose tolerance in Russia I can't say.

Forum members have pulled the bullets, dumped the powder then re-measured to consistent weight while using a quality bullet and obtained a little better accuracy. The steel case seems to be adequate for accuracy and best results will probably be obtained by replacing the Russian bullet and powder and replacing with commonly available powder and bullets.

I don’t shoot steel cased ammo because the most important thing for me is accuracy. And steel cased ammo doesn’t give me the best accuracy. But for plinking, there’s nothing wrong with it and $.30 around is an awesome price.
As far as the rumor that steel cases are hard on your AR 15.I know guys who’ve been shooting steel cases wolf and Tula out of their AR15 for decades. The only thing is that it is harder on is your ejector. And you may go through an ejector or two in a 10 year period if you shoot steel cases a lot.
With the money you’re saving verses brass, it shouldn’t bother you. Most guys keep an extra ejector or 2 on their shelves anyway. I know I do and I don’t even shoot steel cases.

Bullet. The vast majority of rifle accuracy comes from the quality of the bullet. Particularly in the >1.5 MOA range or so. All the other factors can matter, but not in 2 MOA ammo. From what I've seen with the 100 gr Grendel Wolf Steel, is the powder handling is actually quite good, with <20 and usually single digit SD of velocity. I find that nothing short of Remarkable. Only my best care, carefully tuned handloads do that good. Point being, I see very little reason dumping and replacing the powder. If I were doing Mexican Match (*), which a lot of people do to good effect; I would be confident it would make pretty darned good ammo, if I put a good comperable weight bullet over the unmolested powder charge. A 107 SMK in particular, would likely shoot amazing.

Used the steel cases for a 5k run and gun. Loaded my own 120 lapuas into the cases with my own powder. Didn't want to leave a bunch of good brass laying all over the place.

My best results have been with the Speer 90 TNT and SMK 107 (non-tipped). Here's a SMK load shot from my AA 16". As VASCAR says, I pulled the bullet, dumped and re-measure the stock power to 29.0 grains and loaded it to 2.270 length. Search the forum using the words Moscow Match to learn more.
