One should never blow the shot of their choosing. It is bad form. I did and think I understand why now, but still...
Fortunately, I was able to followup with two shots in short order that were on target. This took place on a new property and this was my 3rd night in a row to visit. The landowner has a large hay field getting hit by hogs and it is bordered by pastureland that is also getting hit as well. Based on the landowner's insight, the hogs are coming out of the bottoms and up to the higher pasture and hay field to raid. So I have been watching all the low area from a high point for the previous two nights and seen nothing while there. I actually spotted this guy from the gate as he was up on the opposing ridge. I headed down into the valley to to get closer, and got bogged down in a soupy quagmire as he came off the ridge. So I stood in the water and waited so that he would not hear me sloshing and get spooked. To my benefit, he headed in my direction. Also nice was that he was backed up by a steep ridge with no animals behind him.
