AR15 SBR build
#1
I have a question for anyone who has built an AR15 SBR and gotten a permit for it.
Okay, I live in Florida.I want an AR15 pistol, probably 7.5 inch barrel. But my wrist has bone chips in it.I can’t handle much recoil until I get surgery. So I’m thinking I would like to take an AR 15 pistol lower and put an AR15 rifle stock on it so the recoil will be impacted on my shoulder not wrist.
I know having a barrel shorter than 16 inches with a rifle stock turns it into a short barreled rifle,SBR. I know I need to get a permit for it. And even though I looked it up online,I’m not really sure how to go about it.
I think there are guys on 6.5 Grendel.com who have the answer. Probably LRRPF52. Anyway I’d like to know how to go about doing this before I build it. I know an FFL would have the answer. But I’m asking you guys first ,because at this point it’s just a thought. And I really am not sure if it would be worth the bother of having to go through all the red tape.

I’d also like alternatives to getting an SBR permit, like a pistol brace that goes around the fore arm. Something that could stop the recoil from impacting my wrist. I do not own an AR 15 pistol. But I’d like a 7.5 inch barrel for home defense because it would be handy. I’d be putting my 7.62 suppressor on it.Hell, I might even take it hog hunting.

I live in Florida. I built an sbr. You just have to fill out the atf form 1 and send them $200. Then wait to get it approved and the stamp back before you can build it. Don't know the current wait times but it took about 5 months when i did it a few years ago. You can do it in a trust or as an individual which you can look up pros and cons on. But on a side note, i don't know a suppressor that will say it can be used on a 7.5" grendel. Their might be one but my ultra 7 won't

I didn’t mention the caliber. It’s 300 BO.I wouldn’t use a 6.5 Grendel for home defense.

Same process. Just fill out form 1

Pistol braces work well. The new Tailhook 2 I verry solid and adjustable for length of pull. Form 1 for a sbr if that's what you want. Lots of folks put a pistol brace on till the paperwork comes back. Then install a stock.

Thanks for your advice.
I called ATF. If I do an Eform 1, Then send the prince and photos within a week, the whole process should take 45 days,as of now.

The form is easy. But the lower you use is always an sbr so you will have to notify atf if taking across state lines and stuff

I went down to see my buddy at the Tactical shop.He said there are some braces that you could shoulder as a rifle stock and you don’t need an ATF stamp for. I was told that as long as they have a strap on them it’s considered a brace. And if you shoulder it ,oh well.
If what they told me at the Tactical shop is true ,that might be the route I’d rather take. But like I originally said this is just to thought. That’s why I brought it up for discussion so I can get feedback and different opinions.
What I already don’t like about getting an SBR stamp ,is that I am limited to the caliber I register it under. If my tax stamp states SBR 300 blackout I can’t change the SBR upper to 6.5 Grendel down the road .At least that’s how I understood it.

To be clear if you build the firearm with the intent to shoulder it's a rifle and if it has the 7 inch barrel it's an sbr regardless of whether it's a "brace" or a "stock". I have an ar pistol and an sbr. The definition is based on intent. My ar pistol was built with the intention of being used as a pistol and situationally i might shoulder it.

It's all silly. But the definitions are clear.

I have AR pistols in 223, 9mm, 300, 6.5 Grendel, 7.62x39, and 308 for a total of 9 pistols. 9x$200= $1800 of my money the government doesn't need. Braces work well and are a lot less money in the long run. Less government involvement in where I can take the pistols.

You make a good point. The sensible thing for me to do is build an AR pistol and put a brace on it. I can take it from there.

Could you explain the 7” rule or what you are referencing? I thought anything under 16” barrel was pistol (with a brace and intent) or sbr with stamp.

Earlier he said he wanted to build his with a 7" 300bo barrel. My comment was specific to this particular build

Edit he said 7.5" barrel

Sba4 pistol brace is what you seek.

Thank you.
I found an SB tactical SBA4 AR 15 pistol brace and ordered it for just under $120 delivered on Optics Planet.

Yes...but with that question you might want to ask yourself a few questions...another thread though..

On the Sbr deal, I think everyone should have at least one..
