Accurate 2520

AA2520 was one of Bill Alexander's (creator of the Grendel) favorite powders for the Grendel. Burn rate was just right for a wide variety of Grendel projectiles relative to the case size.

I believe the formula has been changed slightly in recent years and NEW 2520 is close, but not exactly the same, as ORIGINAL 2520.

Anyway, I'd recommend using AA2520. Western Powders has quite a few loads using it in their Handloading Guide on page 56.

I had about 5 pounds of it leftover in an 8 pounder I bought in the late nineties. I happily worked through it when I started loading Grendel. I bought a new 8 pounder, and like it just as well.

I'm getting 2435 from an 18" barrel at near max charge weight with Horn. 123 ELD's.

It is a ball powder so don't expect to get low ES and SD and velocities will change some with temp swings. I shot it in a Springfield M1A1 308 with 168 Sierra MKs in the 1980s for over the course rifle matches and it would keep a bullet in the X ring at 600 yards if I did my job. As to burn rate it is my opinion from using it that it is between IMR 4895 and IMR 4064. It also shot pretty good in the M1 Garand. Was about the cheapest powder you could get back then also. I had just a little bit left in the powder locker and tried it in the Grendel when I was trying to get the Hornady 123 SST bullet to shoot but it was a feudal attempt because that bullet just will not shoot well in either of my rifles no matter what powder or load was tried. The places local that I can get powders has not had any AA2520 in a LOOOOOOOG time. IMR 8208 with 120s is what I use in the Grendel but I have only been into the Grendel for a couple years and have not had time to really do the work with it with light and heaver bullets that I want to.

Found out one thing. Work you loads up in the climate your shooting in. AA2520 is very temp. sensitive.

That has not been my experience at all. I recorded sub 10 SD's over 50+ shot strings and sub .5" 5 shot groups. Every barrel is different so experience is going to vary but my experience with A2520 has been that it is the best I have tested thus far. Temperature sensitivity is the only downside but is easily mitigated by recording dope at different temperatures. I find A2520 very easy to work with and forgiving. A2520 goes with 6.5G like peanut butter and jelly.

There is a lot of data for AA2520 dating back to Bill's original AA loads, and most other reloading sources.

We have 39 different loads across almost all the bullet weights collectively in both Volumes of the 6.5 Grendel Handbooks.

It's a nice powder to use if you also use it in .223 Rem and .308 Win., along with other cartridges that use that powder a lot.

It was initially the go-to powder for speed and case fill in 6.5 Grendel before CFE223 and LeveRevolution.
