I am building a 6.5 grendal so far I have a grendal hunter barrel 18 inches with an aero precision m4 upper. I have a Odin works bolt carrier group. I also have and slr free float handguard. I?m looking for an illuminated reticle scope for 500 dollars or less. Ideally I would be able to shoot out to 500 yards with it. I think power wise I would be looking at a 3-12 because I also plan on taking close shots.

At those ranges I would find me a 1-6 or 1-8 powered scope.
I have the gen2 pst 1-6 scope on my 12.5 and 16 inch.
Good and low powered for up close and plenty of scope too easly hit steel out to 600 yards.
I use a 1-6X24 Strike Eagle for hog hunting.Works great.It has an illuminated reticle.Well within your price range.They also make a Strike Eagle in 1-8X24

On my 18" AR Grendel I have the Primary Arms 1-8 with the ACSS reticle that can be lit up and this reticle has a bullet drop tree in it. I really like this scope. It has clear glass and you can put it on 1 power and fully light up the reticle in the bright sun of day and use it just like a red dot. Then in the late evening at just about dark when those big buck deer want to start sneaking out to feed you can put the light on it's lowest setting and see the aiming point but it does not wash out your target. I also have the Primary Arms 1-6 on an A4 style 223/5.56 and it has been great also. Go to primaryarms.com and take a look. Their AR scope mounts are built just like the Burris but less expensive and work just fine.
Vortex has a diamondback tactical scope 3-12x-40 (or 4-12x?) with an MOA reticle, VMR-1, I like it on one of my Grrrs. Also I picked up a Primary arms 4-14x44 MOA reticle, this one is FFP and is illum reticle. Might be going on my ruger Pred Grrr.
Both of these are in the spec range and budget you mention. You could also go the LVPO (1-6x etc) like above but for me and my older eyes, I like a bit more magnif's...

What are you using the platform for & what type of conditions?
If you're like me & do a LOT of hog hunting at night/lowlight conditions the best "hunting" scope I found was Leupold firedot (mine is a 4-12 vx-r). I went through several illuminated versions before settling, most of them caused too much "wash out" for me under the above mentioned conditions. Not to mention if shooting on the run it works a lot like a typical red dot without all the "extra".
I've changed over to thermals on my "primary" rifles but have zero intention on parting with that Leupold because it's proven so dang handy over the years.
The Leupold VX-R series is on sale at Midway. Definitely worth the money, and the performance is up to par. The only thing I'd say I don't like about my SFP 3-9 is the heavy TMR reticle.

I'll definitely agree with that! I picked up one of their AR-Freedom 3-9's with the TMR reticle also. Mounted it on my 556, took it out to zero & ended up right back in the safe.. May be great for some, but not for me either.
Yea, I'm not sure why Leup doesn't make it an .02 MIL line and hash thickness all the way around. Still visible, still has the dot, and the reticle is actually usable. It's fantastic as a hunting optic, which is what it has become. My current competition glass is a Bushnell Forge 3-18 Mil. Like it so far. Still not perfect though. I miss my LRHSi 4.5-18.

FWIW, I put a Primary Arms 2-10X GLx scope on my 20" Grendel. I've been able to take it out to almost 1000 yards. It's a bit heavy, they're sold out, and one they come back will likely be a little over your price point (I got mine for under $500, but that was a special sale). But it's pretty great glass, and about the only FFP scope I would recommend (most FFP scopes don't really work at the low end of their magnification). Not sure if that helps you any, just giving you some input from a happy user.
For your ranges you don't need 12x. Anything over 10x really should have parallax adjustment and that adds to the cost of your scope. As others have suggested, 1x6, 1x8, 2x10 or 3x9 are capable magnification ranges for your intended use.
I compared some Swift, PA, Vortex and UTG scopes in those magnification and price ranges I have. Vortex Diamondback and PA glass is better than the others. The PA scopes glass clarity is almost imperceptibly better than Vortex Diamondback but the Vortex gets the nod for light gathering to my eye. Don't have any budget Leupolds to compare.
Since you want a hunting scope, I would lean towards one with better light gathering capability and a reticle you like. Having said that I do really like PA scopes for the money.

I have the Primary Arms, 4-16X44 on my AR. The below pic was just to see what it would look like (that's my Grendel upper it is on). I've ordered a Vortex 6-24X50 for the Grendel, waiting for it to come in.
In my ignorance I ordered UTG site rings to mount it. The target pic is what I was able to do with my AR
this weekend. I picked up the individual rings so that I can install a picatinny mounted brass catcher at some point.
I'll get a pic of the AR up at some point.
