Wilson Combat is excited to announce that the 300 HAM?R cartridge, originally developed in 2018, has been accepted by SAAMI as a standardized cartridge.

The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Institute, Inc. (SAAMI), is the organization at the forefront of promoting firearm safety by creating standards that ensure safety, reliability and interchangeability of firearms, ammunition and components.

The .30 caliber cartridge is designed to optimize performance of 95gr-150gr bullets and to function in the AR15 platform. Muzzle velocities range from 2280fps to 2770fps out of a 16? barrel depending on bullet weight. The cartridge operates at a maximum average pressure of 57,500psi.

Designed for self defense, law enforcement and hunting applications, the terminal performance of the cartridge is comparable to the legendary .30-30 Winchester. However, the 300 HAM?R has a substantially flatter trajectory due to the higher ballistic coefficient of the bullets used.

In addition, Wilson Combat would like to publicly thank Starline Brass of Sedalia, MO, Western Powders of Miles City, MT and Sig Sauer Ammunition of Jacksonville, AR for their assistance during development and an extra thanks to Sig Sauer Ammunition for submitting the cartridge to SAAMI.

I built an AR on Wilson's 7.62x40WT cartridge. It was supposed to be an improvement on the 300 Blackout & for use on feral hogs. Now this 300 Ham'r seems to be an improvement on the 7.62x40WT.

I like the 7.62x40WT. I get a little higher velocities than the 7.62x39 & it's way more accurate. I liked it so much I started using it exclusively in 3 gun matches with short range stages (targets under 300 meters). I still used my 5.56mm AR for stages with targets out past 300 meters.

Although it is tempting to convert my 7.62x40WT to 300 Ham'r, I think I'll stay with what I've got. I'd have to get new reloading gear, new brass & work up new loads. Heck, I'm still working on my Grendel reloads. I suppose I could build a whole new AR for the Ham'r... hmmm...

Well I heard back from Bill on the 6mm Grendel, and he is not a fan of the 243/6mm and has no plans for it.

Tried a 300 BO once, it shot well but really I didn't care for dealing with the powders it has to use... fast pistol type powders. Made for a lot of extra bottles I would have to keep etc. 300 hammer isn't much different IMO.

I think that it really comes down to fact that some people just have a fondness for a certain caliber. Those of us who grew up watching movies and TV shows about WII pretty much associated .30 cal with the United States and manly men, dangit. It took a long time for some of us to accept that something as small as 6.5mm could be a good all-around hunting cartridge.
For someone who is determined to have a light recoiling .30 caliber cartridge in a handy semi-auto package, the 300 Hammer is a pretty good choice. The 300 Blackout sacrificed a lot of its supersonic performance in order to accommodate long projectiles for subsonic use.

I have all the parts to build one. Hopefully over the next couple weeks. I like it because I have gobs of .223 brass and with all the shortages, it’s nice to have a common bore size so more of a chance of finding bullets to load. 6.5 bullets can be a pain to find some times and they are almost always expensive, 6.5 grendel brass can be even worse. If it really hits the fan I can cast bullets for the .30 cal and once again there are more mold choices. If I get a moose tag next year it’ll be a tough choice between the grendel and the ham’r, lol.

Yer durned right. I grew up watching TV shows like COMBAT!, and reading WWII biographies like James Altieri's Spearheaders.

But even more influential were my own personal experiences with .30-caliber weapons: Seeing the M1 carbine that my dad brought home with him one time in Germany; handling and shooting the M1 carbine, M1 Garand, M1918 BAR, and M1919 LMG in high school.

The very first rifle I ever bought was an M1 carbine, as was the very last rifle I purchased. The M1 carbine was my all-time favorite, the most enjoyable shooting rifle that I've ever owned. My second most favorite rifle was a Springfield Armory M1A.

I love .30 caliber. If I were ever able to buy another military-style rifle like an AR-15, I might very well opt for .300 HAMR.

I have a M1, a M1A, a 1903A3, a Sears J.C Higgins 30-06 (FN Mauser action), a Howa 1500 in .308Win & a Wilson Combat 7.62x40WT. Used to have a M1 Carbine, a Remington Model 600 in .308Win & a Winchester Model 100 in .308 Win. I wish I still had those 3 rifles. Yeah, you might say I have a thing for 30 cal rifles. My favorite is my M1A. The M14 was my Army service rifle & I shot Service Rifle Matches for many years with my M1A. My number two is my 1903A3. Man, that rifle can shoot! :o

The .300 HAMR seems to be just a tiny bit longer than the 7.62x40 WT, shown here next to the .458 SOCOM on the right.

16.25” barrel. 150gr SST, 2240fps mv with HAMR brass max load.

Has about the same energy as 6.5 Grendel 123gr SST out to 175yds, almost parallel. Grendel starts to walk away from it after that, assuming a 16” Grendel with 2425fps mv with 123gr SST using .462 G1 BC, not the Hornady published .510 G1 BC.

They’re within 65ft-lbs at the muzzle, shrinks to 42ft-lbs by 50yds, and 21ft-lbs at 100yds. They’re matched up at 150yds.

Looks like it stays ahead of the 6.8 SPC 120gr SST at 2460fps from the muzzle-on-out.

I ordered a few boxes of ammo from Wilson. Once I shoot it. I’ll have some brass and cannot wait to load up some I’m wanting to explore the pro hunters 125. Accubond 125 and the Sst 150s. L , have you been loading this round ??

Forgive me brothers for I hath sinned. Built a 300Hamr upper with their 16" barrel that was on sale for $149. My son built one so I had bought the dies to load for his. So due to deductive reasoning I "needed" one for load development (Besides it was on sale I saved money }. Sight in yesterday yielded 2401fps average with 11.8 SD 135 gr BT factory load. Waiting for brass to dry to load a few 150gr Speer Hot Cor. This was was sight in and getting some brass. I will try to post some legit group tests.

It's not that hard to do if you have the right equipment. I have a mini cutoff saw I got at Harbor Freight to convert .223 Rem/5.56mm NATO brass to 7.62X40WT cases. It comes with its own holding clamp that has a v-shaped grove in it that will hold the brass steady while I cut it. However, I also ordered the 300 ham'r cutoff jig 'cause it looks like it will make the job even easier. I can live with the longer cutoff... the Blackout jig would cut the brass too short. I also ordered a RCBS primer catching device for my Rock Chucker press & a brass shavings catcher for my RCBS case trimmer. Always looking for things or ways to make some jobs less tedious.

No, I have not done anything with 300 HAMR, just was listing some of the specifics of it. Bill Wilson basically wanted .30-30 performance from the AR-15.

You can do that with 156 and 160gr in 6.5 Grendel if you really wanted to get as close to the close range, heavier hunting characteristics of the .30-30 Win.

Both require different magazines (300BLK for the 300 HAMR). Grendel requires a different bolt.

Grendel allows you to have more energy on animals within 250yds (although they’re really close if you use 150gr SST in 300), then also reach out far for TGT shooting.

There’s a malfunction in the LAV video shooting the 300 HAMR right after 2:14, even using 300BLK PMAGs.

Magazine design needs to adjust to the increased forward mass of the cartridge stack, where you have 110-150gr projectiles, as well as the ogive shape of .30 cal bullets in basically a straight-walled 5.56 case with a tiny shoulder. Spring weight needs to increase, which places more friction on the bottom of the BCG.

If I were building one, I would do my feed ramp work on the barrel extension since the meplats and projectile shapes on .30 cal bullets are fatter.
