So seeing a good deal on a core rifle systems 18 inch bolt and barrel set I decided to replace the 16 inch one in my BCA upper. Barrel looked ok,couple of minor finish imperfections but nothing to really complain at. Installed nicely with a torque of 46 lbs.
Went next door yesterday to shoot it a little, only had 25 yards so I was just testing function and rough zero. I reworked some of my loads so as to work a ladder in this barrel. Shot and cycled wolf good, shot and cycled 120 gold dot hand load (old light charge) fine.
This is where the problems start. I have been doing Moscow match for a while. In my 12 inch PSA, 16 inch BCA and my friends 22 inch rugger bolt gun the hornady 100 ELD-M loaded in a wolf case loaded to mag length of 2.26 have worked great. So naturally I tried some yesterday and it wouldn't chamber at all. I couldn't even mortar the round out of the gun, I had to carefully pry the bolt back. the projectile was forced into the lands about 50 thousands. Very short throat I suspected.
So I went back home and done some reading and I think I have a good grasp of the compound chamber Grendel 1 and 2 differences. I started to chamber other loads at home to see what ogive's would allow clambering.
Even in hornady factory ammo the projo is hitting into the lands, ELD-M and my 120 TTSX is a no no. The gold dots ogive worked. My hand load 123 SST also intrudes into the throat. Ill post some photos of the factory BTHP bellow this. Should I just shoot about 100 rounds of Wolf through it and see if it loosens up some? I'm going to call core Monday if they're open.

The short throat is a common problem with SAAMI Spec barrels in 6.5 Grendel. My opinion but the manufacturers need to keep the reamer to proper spec or you end up with a short chamber. If the barrel is Nitride/QPQ then it is going to be hard on a finish reamer to fix the issue. On chrome moly and stainless steel barrels a finish reamer will usually take care of the problem.
As you noticed the profile makes a significant difference on seating depth and what will chamber. The 95 grain V-Max and 100 grain Hornady A-Max/ELD-M are blunt projectiles and need to be seated deeper. Any barrel should be able to chamber any factory ammo, especially Hornady 123 grain ELD-M and SST.
I’d see what Core says but I think they need to send you a return authorization label. Out of spec products are a fact of life but how the dealer or manufacturer deal with the problem is what is important.

So, does Core use the SAAMI compound throat?

From the CORE15 website.. Their Warranty
Dear Core Rifle Owners,
A warranty. What else about a product says as much about how highly a maker values their own work? It?s a mark of integrity, an assurance that the person who built it believes in it enough to stand behind it. Lawyers, legalese and fine print have no place in it. And we feel ours both stands on its own and speaks for itself.
?The rifle you have just purchased has the simplest, most plainly written warranty you will ever read. There is no fine print. There are no exceptions. This CORE Rifle Systems firearm has been manufactured and assembled with painstaking care and precision by proud US Veterans, trained by the best there is. If anything is not up to your standard, accuracy included, if anything goes wrong, gets bent, broken, cracked, misaligned, tweaked, snapped or otherwise, simply contact one of our professionals and we will work to make it right. If you are the 5th owner and the rifle has seen 40k+ rounds, it simply? doesn?t? matter. We stand behind our products and we take care of our customers. That is our promise and your assurance.?
We encourage you to take advantage of Core?s legendary, industry leading Lifetime Unconditional Warranty should you experience any issues in the function of your rifle. We would like to emphasize the importance of a thoroughly clean rifle for maximum safe and reliable performance. A clean rifle is necessary to properly diagnose any issues the rifle may have. If you would like to have the Core Warranty Department clean your rifle before diagnoses of the issue, we will happily do so. The standard cleaning fee is $35.00, if the rifle has extensive carbon build up or corrosion additional fees may apply. If you would like to send your rifle in clean, you will avoid any cleaning fees. You can also check out our Common Issue Resolutions to keep from sending in your rifle unnecessarily.
That is the Core Difference. See. Shoot. Believe.

Well, some friends and I went out to ring in the new year with a bang. Figured even with the short throat I’d tweek some loads and tried it out at 100 yards. It performed very well. Best group of the day was 1.5 with my gold dot handload. Even wolf done a surprising 2 inch group. Eld-m Moscow match was 1.8 (loaded very dead in case). I believe I’ll keep it. Still disturbing with factory ammo touching the lands tho.

I couldn't live with that. But I guess if you can keep factory ammo away from it, it would be safe.

If the manufacturers are as concerned as some of their warranties "Imply", why don't they take the time to chamber and eject a factory round before the barrel leaves the factory,,,like right after they finish reaming ??? I had a problem like this that was not figured out until I measured the Wolf steel case. It was almost 0.002" smaller diameter than the factory 123 sst. The wolf was used to test fire the rifle, and it cycled fine, but a chambered, unfired factory round required tapping on the charge handle pretty smartly to get it out of the chamberl. But my problem was tight chamber, the throat was ok. Honed and polished the chamber a wee bit, and it was fine. In light of their "simple" warranty, I would be inclined to at least call and talk to them. They need to know there is a problem,,,,if they don't already know. $0.02 worth

I don't put a barrel even close to an upper until I check the throat with multiple factory and dummy cartridge samples, ensuring they chamber and drop-free from the chamber.
It's one of the first things I check after measuring the gas port diameter.

LRRPF: It was one of your posts about checking the chamber that "put me onto" the problem I had. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience .

Finally get to talk to a tech at core today. They said no problem, if I want them to trim up the chamber it can happen, but. They think accuracy can suffer. This is probably true since most all of my shooting is wolf steel case and my own hand loads. I’m going to take it out again this Sunday on a stable bench and see. He said after a couple more rounds recheck on a factory round, if it’s accurate and shows no signs of pressure it’ll probably be alright.

Lmao. What? Dude my advice send that back for a refund and buy a sammi chambered barrel. That tech just sold you a line of BS because either they screwed the pouch on having the chamber done to sammi specs Are they are knowing saleing a non sammi chambered barrel as a sammi barrel.
It's your own decision on the coarse of action but my advice is refund and walk away.

You think they'd issue a full refund for something like this?
