222 Rem to 6.5 Grendel
#1
Sitting here at "work". Found a reasonable deal on a Remington 788 action with in 222 Rem.

How hard would it be to convert the bolt to work with 6.5 Grendel? I believe the 222 is a .384 bolt face... so another .056 for Grendel? What about the extractor?

Just random thoughts for a custom bolt gun

How about the magazine? Is it the same size as the 22-250 or 243? Or is it skinny for the 222? My dad has a 788 in both of the above cartridges. I could get dimensions from those. But have no idea how much different the 222 may be.
Yard work is not an excuse!

The bolt shouldn't be too hard a good Smith can open it and install a mini 16 extractor for a price.

The big question is the mag. It would probably be ok width wise, since you can get grendel into a 223 mag. The problem will be tweaking the feed lips to hold and release the grendel case at the right time.

I think it could work. If I had a pic of the mag are the mag itself in my hands I could tell you what it woupd need done to it.

I'm wondering if I can put it into a chassis system that would accept either the MagPul or AICS mags. If I can't make the factory mags work. The action crew spacing is about 1/4" longer than M700 short action

As much as I like the Grendel, I would not mess up that 222. Until the 22/6mm PPC came along, the 222 Rem was one of the most accurate rounds on the planet. One could have a lot of fun shooting very small groups with it.

Im almost positve the mdt polymer 223 mags would work. There is an outfit selling modifyed mdt polymer mags for the 224 valkryie.

From what I could tell they just tweaked the mags feed lips with a lil dremel work.

Pretty sure the mag will be the biggest issue but a good smith could fix that in one way or another I think. The original mag will be too narrow for the Grendel though. 788s use single straight stack mags and they are sized pretty tight for fit with the diameter of the case. I have a 788 in 223 that i am toying with the idea of making it into a 6,5mm TCu or 7mm TCU. The latter would make more sense for me as I have 7mm TCU dies.

Love some 788s 223, 7mm-08, 30-30 and 44 Mag

It could be done but I would think you’d want to go with a 22-250 magazine. Personally, I’d find a good deal on a rem 700 in .243 or similar, rebarrel, buy a PT&G bolt, modify mag components and be done with it. Lots of unknowns with the 788 mags IMO.

I thought about a savage grendel when I saw this:

But the Ruger American Predator will get me a nice bolt action cheaper with no headaches with magazines (I hope).

It's just an action with bolt. No barrel.

I was looking at 700 actions also. Hmm..

I have an 308 carbine i bought new in 1981. My very first gun.

I used to have one in 223 and 7mm-08. My brother had one in 243.

Hmm... have to see how the Grendel fits in the 308 mags

You can order complete Rem 700 bolt actions along with a correctly size bolt face from PT&G. They also sell some very good bottom metal that takes AICS pattern mags if you want to put your action is a regular stock instead of a chassis.

Then your only problem is an AICS pattern mag that will fit and feed 6.5 Grendel. Well would you look at that, MDT is now making a metal 12 round AICS pattern Magazine that fits a 6mm BR and 6mm Dasher that should with some minor feed lip tweaking work for the 6.5 Grendel.

222 has the same bolt face as a .223. I would imagine it takes about as much effort to convert 222 to 6.5 grendel, as it does converting .223 rifles to 6.5 grendel. New barrel, new bolt, and new magazine. 222 is a little shorter than 223, so the magazine well may or may not be the right size.

gun for gun the 788 is more accurate than the 700, though either can be made to shoot well with some TLC and a good barrel and bedding There are tons more parts aailable for the 700 than the old 788 which has not been manufactured in over 35 years. Back in the day a lot of competition shooters used the 788 action for it's fast lock time and general accuracy.

Fining a chassis type stock will be an issue but who knows I do not. I will just be happy with mine the way they are for now all 4 are sub MOA shooters and the 7mm-08 is sub half MOA from the factory ( I bought it new in 1982 for 209 out the door)

I still might do something with the 223 one day but not sure what yet

I've often thought about doing something with my 308, but too much sentimental value to mess with it too much

You could just buy a Ruger American in 6.5 Grendel that uses AR mags.

I could. I could get a CZ. I could get a Howa and then spend more money and time to "fix" it.

All those are options on the table. But that would take the fun out of it.

Does anyone have a single stack 222 mag that could check the fit of the Grendel?

So a little research shows that the 788 mags for 222 and 223 are interchangeable, if not the same.

Anyone have either that they can check?
