I have noticed that you Army and Marine Vets seem to ignore the fact that there are other branches of the Service and just because individual Combat with the enemy is not their primary role they get the left overs (from the previous war).

It's not that. I had heard that the Navy has traditionally been low on the totem pole when it comes to small arms. I was just surprised they would still be using '03 Springfields when anyone alive now was in boot camp. I would've thought they'd have had M1 Garands by then.

My only exposure to the USN was when I was stationed on Midway Island for a year, during which time I never saw them with any rifles. But then, we took our M1 carbines to the range only once during that time, so the sailors probably were equally unaware of what we had.

I shot air rifles a lot as a kid. I eventually realized that the main reason I never really became fond of the .223 was that the holes it made in the target were too small. They looked too much like the ones from a .22 pellet. When I shot a firearm, I wanted a bigger hole, dammit!

So much for intermediate cartridge and being able to carry more ammo. With shoulder fired rocket propelled grenades, 40 MM grenades and mortars I see this concept as a big step backwards if considered for general issue. Can you imagine trying to carry six extra loaded 20 round mags. This is the opposite of OICW but just as bad IMHO.

Imagine trying to carry this rifle after it is mounted in a "steerable chassis" like the Aimloc MRR. As near as I can tell, electronics would determine exactly where the rifle should be pointed, then move it to make minor position adjustments before it is fired.

Times change, and so do requirements. Intermediate power cartridges can't defeat hard armor at range.

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see just what kind of magazine pouch arrangement the Army intends to use.

I will be the first to admit I don't know what our warfighters need.

But that thing looks like very far backstep in tech.

That used to be the idea. That changed with the perceived need to defeat modern hard body armor.

The Army wants the capability to penetrate body armor at ranges well beyond what even the best 5.56 AP ammo can.

I really hope they can pull it off as advertised. But to be fair it seems a tremendous leap on many levels. Big shoes to fill even before the new designs are 1% better.
