Grendel vie six8 recivers

I wish my Son still worked in manufacturing at his last job. He could’ve produced a sample in no time with auto CAD and a 3D printer.

I’m always intrigued by these type of venture and enjoy working through some of the issues.

That's the main reason why I did this. Simple so I could see how well it would work and if I could find the answers too make it work.

I might try sanding on the follower tommorw, remove a lil from the rear of the follower so the front of the follower has a higher attack angle.

I played with it some this afternoon with some electrical tape just to see if it had merit. It does but it will need to be done slowly and tested a bunch. To keep from going to far with it.

A purpose built follower would be the best way to go. But having a problem finding someone who has a 3d printer at the moment.

Naw. The local schools don't have anything like that.

So update time.

Got in more range time today. I'm up to 750 rounds of wolf fired from my 4 mags. All 4 mags are holding and feeding 28 rounds of grendel.

Can't think of much more to test.

If anybody has anything they would like to know or a suggestion on something to test let me know.

If not I'm calling it a a rap on the testing and a win for the home team.

There you go fellas. 6.5 grendel pmags. In a round about way of course lmao.

I guess you could always contact PMag and see if they would crank out a follower for the 6.5 Grendel or ie 6.5x6.8 PMag. Some how I don’t think PMag will see this as a financially viable product. For someone reloading there seems to be a significant benefit of using this receiver set.

There was a guy on ARF.com who cranked out some polymer products and was selling them at a decent price. He made a pressure plug for 22 rimfire bolts. The pressure plug was a small plug which sits in front of the buffer to make sure the rimfire bolt doesn’t move inside the upper receiver. This person used a 3D printer for testing prototypes to get to a final design. Sounds like this individual would have the ability to turn out a follower for the 6.5 Grendel for testing. The person who developed the pressure plug was also posting on rimfire central. His screen name was colonelhogan44. His post on ARF.com was in the rimfire and pistol section but I don’t remember his screen name on ARF.com. Here is a link to the thread on rimfire central.

I found the thread on ARF.com and he does use a different screen name, here is a link.

Sounds like a new follower specific to the 6.5 Grendel would be preferable but the existing 6.8 follower seems to be working.

Thank you for the links sir. I will try and run him down and see if he can make me a few to test with.

I contacted magpul and sent them a write up with pics of what I had and what I thought the fixes it would need to work as a commercial sold product.

They replayed with we are not interested in any grendel products.

For handloading it still gives the normal 2.300 coal length room. Unless you window it and have a custom throated barrel. If someone was to do that they could run grendel at 2.360 length (that's what my recivers allow with a windowed mag) if done correctly it can feed 5 rounds at that length.

But that would still require a custom throat.

For what it's worth I'm perfectly fin as it is. Others may not be and I do agree a specific follower would be nice to have and I will be running down that lead soon.

The mags in my mind have no cons compared to metal grendel mags. And fall even in all aspects of metal grendel mags.

Same laod length for handloads- check
Polymer mags-double check
High capacity- check

It's just that the mags do take a good breaking in, and the rounds do make a light contact with the front of the mag until they carve out the lil flase feed ramps, so I know most people will complain about that.

I need to get a pic up of what I'm talking about.

Hope these pics show what I'm talking about when I say false feed ramps.

For what it's worth they look worse in the pic then they are in real life. I took pics of this mag because it was my first mag and has the most usage of all 4 of my mags.

I have thought about just taking a flat file and ramping the front lip myself with the file on a brand new mag and see what that would do.

Like I stated I know others will complain and cry about this. But it's what it is, I'm ok with it but that's me.

Forgot too add.

This only happens with the high cap mags when loaded to full capacity. The 10 round mags doesn't have this issue.

10 round six8 pmag loaded to full with 10 rounds of 6.5 grendel federal fusion ammo.

This is my newest hunting/range mag I have 4 of these as well. This mag still needs a good amount of breaking in. It's still stiff to insert and lock in the rifle at full capacity. The others are broke in good and insert and lock in with a full capacity just fine.

VASCAR2. I found the guy from the links and his company's website. Sent him an email about designing a follower for testing. Will update when I here back from him.

Fingers crossed.

Well looks like the custom follower might be a dead end. Have heard back from the gent I contacted through the links and haven't had any luck finding anyone with a 3d printer and cad program.

I don't know any thing about this company. But they may give you some idea of the cost.https://icomold.com/ Looks like tooling is the killer.

Yea I only need one or two for testing, so going to a full on company is just not workable.

Ok so lil update.

Some measurement data for some future loads I will be doing up for this rifle.

Centerfire was nice enough to mail me a 153 A-tip and a 150 SMK to take measurements in my 16 inch AA sammi chambered barrel I used in this build.

Now my windowed SIX8 pmag will let me run handloads as long as 2.360 coal. So here is what I got when I measured each bullet in this chamber and then made dummy rounds to test extraction.

153 A-tip contact to lands measurement
Coal=2.368
Ojive= 1.710
Dummy round set at
Coal=2.358
Ojive=1.700

150 SMK contact to land measurment.
Coal=2.400
Ojive=1.682
Dummy round set at
Coal=2.360
Ojive=1.650

Both dummy rounds locked in fine and extracted fine.

My window mag allows 5 rounds and both of those dummy round lengths are gtg.

Will be a lil while before I get around to doing any of these loads but I plan on useing.

Leverevolution powder
Cci450 primers
Starline cases

Sidenote the 135 atip bullet should be gtg as well in my setup.

The 153 A-tip should make for dang fine hammer of God hunting bullet from my 16 inch barrel at 200 or less yards.

153 A-tip and 150 SMK side by side.

Going to be some fun with these.

Headshots,neck shots, sheilds, Texas heart shoots. It's going to be allllllllllllll good with these bad boys lmao.

AA2520, CFE223, H4895, and IMR4895 all look like good options for those bullets. QL predicts the four powders will reach max SAAMI pressure before compressing the load. IMR4895 should have the highest charge volume.

I was thinking leverevolution might work great. I have cfe223 and leverevolution at the moment don't have any of the other powders you listed.

Will give the 153 A-tip a go with cfe223 first then the lever. If it don't work well, I will get some of the other powders you listed to try.

But from what I have seen with the 129/130 weight bullets I have used so far. I think the leverevolution will probably work great.
