10-shot Howa Mini Grendel Magazine?
#1
Hi
Has anyone successfully worked on a 10-shot Howa Mini Grendel Magazine?
Last night I put two magazines together, base-to-base, and using a 10-shot AR mag spring got it to function.
With the lip on the bottom of the mags, I am sure there is something that can be made up as an effective joiner.
But just thought I would reach out to the horde and see if anyone else has done this?
One solution I was thining of is a 3D print file of an extended mag body that slides on to the lip on the base of the existing magazines, and uses the current mag base would be ideal (?) Can anyone drive 3D software?
Or has anyone else come up with a solution?
Big Grin
The club I shoot with runs 10-round comps, it would be nice to be able to use this platform.

I am very interested in a ten round mag as well.

You might beable too modify the follower and spring retaining plate of a 204/223 howa mini mag and get 8 or maybe 9 rounds in it.

But you would be walking untested ground for sure.

Splashy I sent you a PM sir. We need too talk.

I belive I can modify a mag body and epoxy it to the bottom of anouther 5 round grendel mag and then modify the follower and spring retaining plate and get you a 10 round are more mag for the howa grendel.

Probably wouldn't be a good idea too beat the tar out of it but if your only useing it in a prone or bench shooting setup, it might be strong enough for the job and give you what you seek.

I would like 3 10 rounders for my mini action in an MDT for prs. I have contacted MDT they are not interested in making them. My next contact is Amend then p mag. I don’t see where there is a patent on the5 round so maybe a 3 d printer guy could make one. I wonder if Howa it self knows of the demand sadly I don’t speak Japanese to read their website and call their customer support. Can’t be a law or political issue because they make 10 round 223 for the mini.

Safe yourself the trouble and time on the phone and just build the mag you want yourself.

You can forget howa/LSI giving us anything we ask for. They are perfectly happy leaving the rifle setup as is.

the issue with getting 10 into it is its a polymer mag and its limited in width, sme reason we don't have polymer double stack ar mags, joining two mags together would work but would be remarkably long for capacity and also makes for an $80 mag if you are going to go the 3d printing route you may as well pring a mag extension rather than a mag body coupler
Punctuation is for the weak....

The howa polymer mag width is fine. When you cut one down you can rework the lil ramps in the mag and it will allow the rounds to almost double stack.

That's how you can put 4 rounds in a cut down mag.

Now your correct in it being expensive too join 2 mags, the howa mags are expensive for what they are. But if it could be made to work like I was thinking of doing.

It would only make the mag about a 1 1/2 longer.

I was thinking, a guy could cut the bottom off a mag just above the lil line that sticks out, then sand down the cut area so it nice and flat, then epoxy that to the bottom of the other mag.

That would give more then enough mag length for 10 rounds maybe more. The problem is finding a mag spring that would work properly.

And I'm not real sure how durable the mag would be, might be ok for bench or prone target work.

If someone wants a mag like this and is willing to pay the cost for such a gamble that it might not work. They can send me 2 mags and I will work it up for them free of charge.

If a person has a regular stock and wants 10 round capability it seems the best route would be to send the stock to CDI, and have Jeff Allen inlet the stock for his AICS bottom metal.

You could then run AICS mags with a spacer for the Grendel.

A5Blaster, are you the person that was working on a blind box mag or hinged floorplate? thanks

Several guys tryed the spacer kit for the aics mags with grendel and it didn't work.

I have been working on one in my shop yes. But I only after I had found a gunsmith that had been working on one and made a post about what he had done so far.

I emailed him a few times but never heard back from him. He might have been busy or something. So I started working on one myself.

I'm still tweaking it and working through the design, that's all I will say on it for now.

But it has kind of taken a back seat to other mag setup testing at the moment as well. I will return to it later this fall I'm sure.

Best route is CDI bottom metal and use the MDT 6BR magazines. Not cheap but should reliable. Dasher case length is the same as the Grendel. Only difference is the Grendel is .028" smaller in diameter. I've loaded Grendel rounds in my MDT .308 mags and they stack and feed fine on my American Rifle Company Nucleus bare action.

Edit.

The aics mags with adaptor block have been tryed but couldn't get too work.

This might work great but not sure how they would work with the Howa mini action.

If and when you get the hinged floorplate working I am interested in purchasing. Or, if you can point me in the direction of who you found working on one I'll make contact.

I bought the Howa mini in 6.5 Grendel for my daughter to deer hunt with. Looking back on it I don't know what I was thinking and it was a terrible decision.

I like the barreled action. The HTI plastic stock isn't that bad. BUT the "bottom metal" and "magazine" feel like they were molded from the same plastic as a water gun.

The mag release location is a HUGE deal as far as the worst place possible. What idiot thought that up? This is a hunting rifle for her, so magazine protruding below the stock is a very bad idea.

Again, my fault for not thinking this thru enough on how bad the magazine and release are going to potentially cause a problem.

If I had a milling machine I would make one myself - use a follower and spring from a Model 7, maybe even the internal box, and go from there.

Ok. Go to DIP's website buy the metal bottom metal, and new mag release they sell plus the aluminum mag floor plate.

Then find the data thread on how to flush fit the mag. If done correctly it will give you 4+1 mag capacity and be a flush fit mag.

Doing it this way is going to be cheaper then buying a hinged bottom metal from me.

If flush fitting the mag is beyond your skill level, you can send it and the DIP aluminum mag floor plate to me and I will modify the mag for you.

Thanks for the advice. DIP actually has a link to the mag mod on their website on the page for the bottom plate.

There are other rifles out there that have the mag release in the same location, but with a better design i.e. Browning X-bolt, Ruger American with rotary mag, and I also have a BLR that is similar.

The mag setup may be no problem for many, but for a 12 year old girl sliding a rifle on the rail of a deer stand to get in position on a deer - well, we all know Murphy's law. She isn't strong enough to fully support the rifle, so we have to use a support.

Last year I bought a mini-fortune cookie bag from Weibad to put on the rail of the ladderstand (double). It works really well for a rest for her with added stability.

She killed 3 deer over 3 years with a Ruger Ranch in 300 blackout. I felt "upgrading" to the Howa and Grendel was a good move. The Howa definitely feels like a better quality rifle, and the Grendel is said to perform well on deer.

The Ruger American wasn't without it's unique set of issues though - easy bolt lift when firing pin is cocked which can result in a bolt out of battery which equals "click" instead of "boom".

Nothing is perfect.

That's why I like DIP's mag release so much. It goes in the same spot but is changed so it is flat and you have to pull down on it to release the mag instead of the oem howa type that sticks out like a sore thumb.

That mag release and flush fitting the mag should remove any accendental mag drops while getting setup.

PM me for address if you need help flush fitting the mag. Also I highly suggest the DIP aluminum mag floor plate for the flush fit mag. It just makes it much easyier too do, lot less sanding.

With the mag internals properly modifiyed the mag will hold 4 rounds and lock in on a closed bolt with a round in the chamber.

Also contact hokiepokiekid from this fourm. I bought his bottom metal. It was cheaper then the DIP bottom metal. He may still have a few leavt for sale.

That's not just a mag block adapter in a modified AICS 308 magazine. To my understanding, I don't own one, only spoke on the phone briefly with MDT, it's a dedicated built for the cartridge magazine by the manufacture, MDT.

Yea that's what I was getting at. It looks like it would stack and then feed grendel. But I'm wondering if it would even fit into the howa mini action.

Would with the CDI bottom metal. That has already been done. The issue then is are things linked up in the correct spot. That is a combination that hasn’t been tried yet.

The problem I have been running into is most magazines are too wide or too long to fit into the bottom of the Howa. It's difficult to find on that will sit high enough to engage the feedramp in the action.
