6.5 Grendel Pistol Issue

I have an 11 inch carbine gas AA barrel that runs just fine, even without adjustable gas.
I was worried id be over gassed, however cycles fine and ejects at 3:30 - 4 o clock...im really diggin this set up alot.

A linear comp type of muzzle device makes a whole lot of sense if your not going to be running a muffler on it. A LC does throw the sound down range that is for sure making it more shooter friendly at a cost of recoil and flash mitigation.

Shouldn't be necessary to get a Faxon 12" with carbine gas to function. The Noveske Pig shouldn't be the determining factor in function or not function. There's plenty of pressure in the 6.5G round to operate a 12" carbine gas system, without it.

It's not a solution, but it can't hurt when you need more back pressure. In my case, I think the main problem is the adjustable gas block is too restrictive even at full open, compared to a free flowing non-adjustable block. Unlike WG Joe, it's only Wolf that gives me a problem -- Hornady black has worked 100% even with the GB partially closed. I'm wondering if Wolf's lighter bullet presumably giving higher velocity and hence less dwell time is further compounded by a poor seal of the bimetal bullets in Faxon's 5R rifling.

That's what I love about the Noveske knock-off I'm using; the krinkov style cone that closes off the end of the linear comp body is like the first baffle in a can and catches a lot of blast, reducing both recoil and flash significantly. It shoots a lot softer than my 18" mid length 6.5G.

I had the same problem with my 12.5” BA build. Ended up just ditching the gas block it came with and replaced it with a Troy gas block, and the problem went away.

To all who have posted comments and suggestions since my last post, THANK YOU! I've been a little under the weather since my last post, I haven't made it to the range or posted any updates. All is OK now, just a couple of "procedures" (short hospital stay) that are due to old age. Getting old is not for sissies!

Stuffandguns..........can you elaborate on your build? Port size, if you measured it while the gas block was removed? Troy gas block; standard non-adjustable?

KSwhitetails, thanks for the "get well wishes"! I'm 65, I can still do all I want to do; besides guns, I'm into hotrodding/riding Harleys, building/racing cars (on road courses, Hallet Raceway, west of Tulsa), etc., but I had to get a "tune up", without going into anymore details here. I've got to get back up and running, I've got a cabin to build in CO!

I'm originally from southern OK, but I've been in the Tulsa area since '76, so 2/3 of my life is here. I usually go to the US Shooting Academy west of Owasso. They have a great facility, I just wish they had longer than a 300 yd range. I've looked into other ranges/clubs, Red Castle has longer ranges, but its about an hour there one way for me, and they have a waiting list to get in.

I'm assuming you still get back to the Tulsa area due to family being here?

I’ve got to bring my grendel down a time or two a year to show some of the gun nuts in the fam the changes/additions. None of them are rifle people so they aren’t ever any help or very interested in finding a good place to go, and usually there’s other things to catch up on so shooting takes the back seat.

Update; I still haven't made it back to the range, but I have several things to try on my to do list when I go. I'll post an update on this 12/5" Gr upper ASAP. As stated above and elsewhere, I had to take a slight detour due to health issues, one outpatient procedure and one procedure involving a hospital stay. I'm at home, each day is a little better, just not fast enough for me. I'm not used to being slowed down by health or anything else. On top of that, Oklahoma schools have been in the news, we have a 10 yr old son that's home keeping me company since school is out this week due to the teacher walkout and all that goes with it. If I was a little quicker in my movements, and weather was decent, it would be a good time for he and I to take a trip to the range, but I can tell I'm not there yet.

Wideglide, I hope all is well. I thought I'd let you know that I resolved the issue I was having with my 12" Faxon pistol build by drilling the port out from .075 to .077. I have a drill press but kept it simple using a hand drill with a depth stop on the bit, similar to what is shown in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KInGRI3jx9A. It was my first time doing that so I was a little reluctant, but it was super easy and only took about a minute once I had everything set up.

Given my experience, I think your 0.0595" gas port is wayyy too small and must be the culprit. I just finished a 5.56 16" midlength Ballistic advantage pencil barrel build and am thinking I may have to drill that gas port out as well since it's ejecting at about 4-5 o'clock with a standard carbine buffer. It seems BA is tending to undersize their gas ports, although I have an 18" midlength hanson profile in .223 wylde that has performed exceptionally right out of the box.

I had the same problem with the BA barrel, I think I went up to .063-.065. I used a new drill bit with a wooden dowel that fit the bore to protect the rifling. Invest in a set of numbered HSS drill bits, I've used them several times to open up gas ports.

My 12" Faxon barrel CLGS has a .068" port. Runs like a raped ape.

.055" just isn't letting enough gas volume flow through during plug dwell time.

I'm assuming I have the same 12" faxon group buy barrel, so my port must have been .068 too rather than .075. I did measure before drilling it out but can't remember.

Update: Sorry it's been so long since I've posted! I'm up and running, been in CO most of the time building a cabin, not much time for shooting. However, I have recently joined a private rod & gun club, been on the waiting list for ~2 yrs. I took two 6.5 Gr rifles and the 12" Gr pistol to the range this week. I was having too much fun playing with the rifles, they're dialed in. I played with the 12.5" BA 6.5 Gr pistol, just playing with buffer weights and springs, to no avail. It's accurate as a single shot! I guess I just confirmed I need to pull the gas block off and drill the gas port out. I've went thru several posts on several threads, I've got a pretty good bracket of port sizes, I guess I'll start on the small side and see how it goes.
