Magpul Hunter American stock

It’s a semi-permanent solution at best but, it does work and snug things up considerably.......I hate to say it and jinx myself but, I think I may have finally cracked the code on the AR mags/factory stock. I’ve got the E-Lander feeding them virtually everytime now. Took long enough!

Was the tape part of your solution? If so that is kind of a bummer that we have to use tape to fix a Ruger.

Yes and no. I initially put the tape on first to help snug things up and it still fed like crap. Tried the Magpul Hunter, and it sucked.

Went back to the RAP and started bending the feed lips. And finally got it where it worked reasonably well. I suppose you could get it to work reasonably well bending the feed lips and without tape. YMMV.

I agree it’s “kind of a bummer”.

I dicked around all morning with the Hunter stock and both types of AI mags. Bending lips, trying this, trying that. In the end, both the metal AI mags with the PR conversion and Magpuls factory plastic version, seemed to work equally bad/well as the other regardless. OTOT, I’m coming to,the conclusion that the AI mags are also a pita to load for me with my arthritic hands. The AR mags are much easier to load. So what’s the point? Chances are I’ll never take advantage of the extra room in the mag anyway. If I need/want more performance, I’ll just shoot the Creedmoor. I’ve wasted enough time, effort and have had my fill of it for now.

Plus my Howa action just arrived. Cool

Good luck Gentelmen..........

Your joining me in the "gave up on the RAP Grendel" club. I'm in the Howa camp for now as well, but looking to see if I can jump ship to Savage. IMHO, the Howa is only acceptable because of the aftermarket parts and modifications we were able to come up with for it. "Out of the box" I was pretty disappointed with it as well. Even still, it's not a "true" flush fit mag and it is a little constricting on the overall case length, hence the Savage.

Well, not really giving up, just cutting my losses. Wink

I’ve actually got it working “ok” now in the factory stock. I wouldn’t want to rely on it going into war but, for just goofing off, it’s a lot better than it was right out of the box.

I’ve been pondering a Savage conversion for some time now as well. Have a couple of candidates laying around here I’ve been eyeballing. I just can’t get excited about converting an Axis, then eventually having to replace the stock on it later. Plus, the mag system they use is barely any better, if that, than the jury rigged crap I’m using right now. So, again, what’s the point, at least for me?

While I’m huge fan of the Grendel, it’s really in the AR platform where it shines and holds my interest. In a bolt gun, I’m still wondering why? When I think I could just shoot the Creedmoor with reduced loads and still come out ahead.

How about "just for fun"? I already have working ARs in 6.5 Grendel and Howa's in 6.5 Grendel. Why not see if I can make it out of a Savage?

Also, I really like it's performance considering the small amount of recoil. For whitetail, I find it ideal (especially for kids). It has more energy downrange than a 30-30 and can shoot heavier pills than a .243. I'm at that stage in life where my youngest is 10 and my oldest isn't too far from making me a grandpa. I want something that kids can shoot and I will also enjoy taking out into the woods. It doesn't make sense for everyone and every situation, but I just "like it".

I just emailed timney to ask when they would roll out a timney for the howa mini..... answer was "we'll put it into our future triggers bin..." so didn't get any warm fuzzies from them on that.
'Course they have one for the RAP platform but then all of this mags-thing... well, it gives me pause...

.............“wondering why”? Was more of a personal reflection.

Besides, I’m already having way too much fun, I don’t need anymore. Big Grin

I hear you there Grey. Although I personally really like the Howa HACT trigger. That is one of the nicer things about the rifle, but I understand that it isn't everyone's cup of tea. One more reason to put some hope in the Savage model 10 series. Lots of aftermarket options.

Respectfully, after what I’ve just seen, I’m starting to really have my doubts about the Grendel working in the Savage either! It may be, the Grendel NEEDS a “mini action” to cycle properly.

Guys have been making rem 700 and model 7 grendels for years useing the short action and didn't have as much trouble getting it to feed as you are with the ruger.

Guys have also used savage short actions in the past to build grendels as well.

It's my firm belief it's something too do with the ruger action why it's having so many issues.

That is very possible. I've heard of people having success with it and I've heard of it not working. Only way to know for sure is to research it well and do everything that "should" make it work.

I tried it, still have the 22" match barrel savage threaded. I couldn't get feeding/mags to work, even tried the Savage factory 7.62x39 mags (still have a couple of them too). I think it has to do with having a block in the rear of the mag and then having feed lips that are long enough. The nose kept nose-diving on feed. I'm not proficient in "gradually bending" the lips to make-work, so eventually I gave up. Another part could be having that extra long bolt head block at the rear of the head... which I did not have, this blocks the bolt from going too far back, I think.
I think JAS was able to get his to work...
I eventually turned my model 10 action into a really nice creedmoor target gun.

If there is a way to modify/produce a mag (or mag+bolt) then it certainly would be a great little package...

O!O!O!O! maybe those guys who developed the poly grendel mag... the Amend2 guys.... maybe their follower and feed lips and some other tweaks could make it work?? Or maybe this is just wishful thinking...

I should save the link to this thread. I've had people try to tell me that any RAP after market stock will work with a Grendel RAP. "All you have to do is use AI mags" When pressed, they have to admit that they have never done it themselves or actually seen it done. I'd love to know of one that did work. Then I could pick their brains on how to replicate that success and post it here.

Magpul will come out with a mag once we get something Frankensteined to work but not before is my luck. I plan on using it for longer range hunting (out to 400 yards) so as long as I can get one or 2 reliable mags then I good.

According to this thread they are working on a AICS .223 mag for the hunter stock and other calibers (maybe that means Grendel) but so far it just seems like internet talk.

That seems to be my luck as well. Sad

Are you just dead set against the factory stock/set up?

I hit the range again today and was pretty pleased with how things went with the “modified” AR mags in the factory stock. Probably shot 100+ rounds and only had a few failure to feeds. Seriously, only 2 or 3, maybe 4 at the most. And every time it was trying to feed the first round. I’m going experiment without any “foil tape” on the mags next time.

Of course, given a choice I’d prefer running the Magpul stock but the factory setup may be tolerable after all.

Ruger Grendel shoots quite well in the Magpul Hunter stock, just need a good mag for it.

Middle and right side are Hornady American Gunner, left side is Hornady Black.
(Bottom left should have been tighter but rushed one shot as I held my breath too long).
All are MOA and under at 90.5 yards, I believe it's accurate enough to hunt with.Cool
