The Canadian way eh!!!

In Canada, the typical AR-15 falls under the classification of 'Restricted', which means it is only permitted to be used at an approved range. The restricted class also includes handguns, and any semi auto center fire rifle with a barrel under 18.5". Granted there is the 'Prohibited' class but I won't get into those too deeply, these would be AK and variants as well as the HK G series.

Some Canadian manufacturers have manufactured receiver sets from scratch with modifications to certain feature sets to get them branded as 'not a variant of' and be its own unique rifle and enjoy non-restricted (NR) status, provided the barrel is over 18.5". We do have quite a few NR class auto's right now, but anything 'black' or pistol gripped, tended to be restricted. It's a convoluted classification system dreamt up by your typical liberal.

I swore I wouldn't own a restricted as I don't care to shoot at a range only. I have some property and like to walk out my door and shoot groups or smash steel.

Just prior to Christmas, I landed a Maccabee Defence SLR receiver set and started to gather up parts to build my first of two or more non-restricted gas guns. I'm a precision bolt gun guy through and through, I designed and built the C14 that the Canadian Snipers use, I also created the night vision rail on every USMC M40A5. So for me, accuracy is a must!!!!

I ordered all the various pieces to build the complete rifle, including two 20" HBAR contour SS 5R 1-8 twist barrels, one in .223 Wylde, the other in 6.5 Grendel. These barrels are made by a Canadian company called International Barrels Inc, or IBI. I have a fair bit of experience with their .308 and .338 Lapua barrels and had no problem picking them for these builds. Based on which parts arrived in time, I ended up with the .223 barrel on the rifle first. I also picked a Canadian made Trigger Tech trigger, if you've ever squeezed one, you know. These break like a glass rod, nothing compares!

When my Grendel barrel showed up last week, I did the swap and shot some factory ammo as noted on the target.



After those 30 rounds I gave it a cleaning got it ready for some handloads tomorrow. I currently shoot a pair of CZ 527's, an MTR and an American. I have some pet loads already and will workup to those goals.

Yes, I've got one on a 527 in .223 and it's a drill, groups in the .3's pretty steady.

I love the MTR, I pillar bedded it and it has a pet load worked up with a 108 Scenar that is 1/2moa

Out of curiosity what makes it NR vs R?

The AR15 is restricted by name, so any variants of it get classed the same. From what I understand, if they can even make an AR15 upper fit on a candidate non-restricted lower with duct tape and fire one shot, it won't get NR status. On this particular receiver set, the upper drops on and slides back about an inch just like a pistol slide. Then just in front of the magazine well, there is a hex head bolt up into a lug that hangs down from the upper. I actually like the set up, there is zero play between the upper and lower. One 3/16" wrench and 15 seconds and the upper is off.

I shot some handloads today, and I'm stoked!!!! I didn't have as much time as I hoped for and was getting chased by the setting sun. I managed a .385" five shot group with XBR and 120 Scenar. I loaded five more of those and put four into .56" and the fifth opened it up to .790". I then tried some 95vmax loads I had made up for my 527 American and put five into .675". I couldn't ask for better performance, considering how little effort I put into load testing. Conditions were -9C or 15F.
