PSA 12" 6.5G Pistol Kit Opinions

On the instructions for my Vortex Strike Eagle it recommends 50 yards. Using the Vortex App I came up with following info.

This is for a 123 grain SST at 2250 FPS, BC .460, 450’ ASL, Optic 2,7” over bore
Top stadia line is 50 yard zero

Second line -2.4 MOA 215 yards

Third line -5.6 MOA. 295 yards

Fourth line -9.5 MOA. 385 yards

Bottom line -14.5 MOA. 480 yards


200 yards SST is at 1945 FPS. 1033 foot pounds of energy
300 yards SST. is at 1803 FPS. 888 foot pounds of Energy
600 yards SST is at.1426 FPS. 555 foot pounds of energy


Here is data for 123 grain SMK BC .510, 2250 FPS, 450’ ASL, Optic 2.7” over bore

Top line 50 yard 0

Second line -2.4 MOA. 225 yards

Third line. -5.6 MOA. 305 yards

Fourth line. -9.5 MOA. 395 yards

Bottom line. -14.5 MOA. 495 yards.


This is just to give an idea of how I make my range card for my carry load. Of course if your using an ACSS reticle the stadia lines might be at different MOA.

Velocity 2335 FPS, BC .400, Optic 2.7” over bore, 450’ ASL

Top line 50 yard zero

Second line -2.4 MOA 225 yards

Third line -5.6 MOA. 310 yards

Fourth line -9.5 MOA. 395 yards

Bottom line -14.5 MOA. 490 yards

IMO - you really need to know what your plans are for the rifle to pick your zero. The Grendel Pistol is capable of significant range with accuracy (600+).

Whatever your zero, learn what your hold over/unders are for 25 yards and out if you plan on a RDS or a capped turret scope/don't plant on dialing a scope.

I put the 12" upper on a PSA lower. It has a 3.5 lb. CMC flat trigger. The optic is a 1-8 Vortex Strike Eagle. I took it and 4 other firearms to sight in at the range last week. When I pulled the ammo crate out I realized I had only brought 4 rounds of 120 grain Federal Fusion for the Grendel Pistol. I fired the 4 rounds at 50 yards and got a 1/4" group. I'm going back this week with more Fusion and 123 Hornady SST's. I'll post my results afterward.
I have other options but I plan to hunt this deer season exclusively with my Grendel Pistol. I'm in the Piedmont part of North Carolina and don't have an opportunity for shots over 150 yards. It's not that much lighter than a 16" carbine but it is extremely portable.

Put mine together tonight and am loving it so far. My dumb bass forgot the ammo so can't fire till Sunday. I did measure it fully closed and it is 26.5"-26.75". Have a simple red dot on it but may order a 1-6 or 1-8 very very soon.

Got mine assembled. Used a trigger group I worked over years ago and added a over travel screw. Only issue is the charge handle is too tight to the lower receiver and is hard to charge. I've a gunfighter handle at home and will try thar of just mod this one a little. Haven't shot yet. Will this weekend. Feels good and looks good too. Measured it at full collapse as 26.5"-26.75" to muzzle not flash hider.

Got my kit put together this evening! Man, is it nice and light! Next step is to figure out what I'm going to do for an optic, so it might be a bit before I shoot it. To the best of my knowledge it is legal to shoulder a pistol brace at the moment. Am I correct on this? If that's the case I'll be looking at a strike eagle or something similar!

I bought the psa 12" upper this morning. Couldn't pass it up for 251.99 with discount code psa10. I'll put it on a pustol lower I have, thinking 1-4x scope or the new primary arms cyclops 1x prizm.

Finally took mine out for a trial shoot. Very impressed, shot some American Gunner and it was a easy sub MOA at 75 yards.

I think if you want accuracy get the stainless steel. I bought the Nitride CMV since I will be shooting Wolf steel cased bimetal bullets in this barrel. I like the corrosion resistence and little better barrel life with the Nitride.

I went with the nitride as well for same reason as vascar2, it will be fed wolf classic. Decided on the Athlon Talos 1-4 scope, I've heard good things about athlon so thought Id check out their cheap model.

Accuracy wont be different between a stainless steel barrel and a chromoly nitrided barrel. Accuracy is dependent on the quality of the barrel, and these two from PSA will be made in essentially the same way.

Now, a stainless steel barrel will 'break in' much sooner than one with a nitride finish... but the nitride will extend the overall life of the barrel much longer.

Since we’re talking about PSA 12” 6.5 Grendel builds here is mine next to my Tavor for size comparison. The Tavor has a 16” 5.56/223 barrel and 20 round Pmag in the well. I opted for A-2 grip and standard AR-15 trigger guard instead of Magpul grip and trigger guard. Both have QD sling swivels with Blackhawk two point slings. Seventeen round E-Lander in the magwell of PSA.
