Grendel Warrior's Shoot at the NRA WC!!

Middle of the week in Raton - Ghost town...Yeah, unless another hotel or two has closed.

The only caveat to that is if it's a hunting season going on.

Just got off the phone with Ken Mestas, the Program Director. He is holding 3 rooms in a Founder's cabin for any of you guys who speak up, for lodging for the Warrior's shoot.

I forget the nightly cost but it's pretty decent. well-set up room and its own separate bath, with a common area for kitchen/sitting etc...

So if you want one of these rooms, call the WC and ask for Ken, tell him you're in the Grendel Warrior shoot and you can reserve one of those rooms...

There are 3 rooms total he's got, so first come first served!!

Food is on your own or do it like Brian is talking about, thru the WC eating facility...

Reminder, the Warrior's shoot will be Oct 10-11 at the NRA Whittington Center, Raton, NM.
This is only about 2 wks away, get your plans all finalized!

I have my hotels booked for the road trip and i have a Founders cabin room booked at Whittington Center arriving Tuesday evening and leaving Friday AM so i am all set up and looking forward to it. Who else is going to be there? and where and when to meet, Brian

GF Youngest daughter ended up admitted to the hospital yesterday. My Clan will not be there. Damnit.

I really hope this goes like a dream for all of you. Wish I could be there. This new 2nd shift nonsense is making my current life less bearable, and I need the income, or trust me I'd be on the road tomorrow morning as well. Take and post lots of pics for us poor bastards that can't/won't make it!

I'd be not very happy with the membership that spoke up. Had the youngest not been admitted to the hospital, I'd have had my whole horde down there.

Kudos for undertaking a 2 day trip to visit the NRA’s premiere shooting facility. Truly a terrible shame you had no one to share the experience with.

Aside from the spaciousness of the venue, what was your overall impression?

Sorry for not answering sooner but i have been busy with doc appointments since i got back, I had a great time and it is an amazing place 36,000 acres and only 3,000 acres used right now for lodging and ranges. The drive down there was interesting once i got below Salt Lake every pass had fresh snow and fog which made it interesting. I got there safely but late and had some fun trying to find my cabin. The cabin was roomy and clean and worked well for me, I did not bother with cooking anything as town was real close, The restaurant on site was closed for the season.
The first day i went to the high power silhouette range saw no one there with a grendel so i proceeded to shoot, I discovered i had a problem with my scope so it was off to the sight in range to replace the scope with a back up i had just bought. I sighted it in and back to the silhouette range were i had a great time shooting at targets from 219yds up to 547yds(the targets are set out in meters). Dial in the distance and hold for wind i managed to hit them all. As i was packing up a truck with Texas plates pulled up and out stepped the only other person from the forum i met. He had decided last minute to make the drive but was not feeling good so he drove home the next day.
The next morning i woke to low clouds so after breakfast i again headed to the silhouette range and there was only 2 older gentlemen shooting, They were trying to hit the White Buffalo at 1125yds the problem was you could not see it lol.We shot at the lower targets for a while and then the clouds lifted and it was a go, They were trying to hit it using no support they got close but no cigar, The wind was brutal. They tried for about 2hrs and i was spotting for them and i learnt a lot about what the wind was doing up there.
Aftefr they left i decided to see if i could hit the White Buffalo, I put the distance in to Strelok Pro and it told me to come up 47.14 MOA and hold 2.85 MOA left for wind. Three shots and i did not see were any of them went but i noticed the wind had picked up at the target by watching grass and trees(no flags by the target) So i started holding farther left(wind was blowing left to right). I started at 3.5MOA then 4MOA and i saw were it hit, To hit the Buffalo in the center i ended up holding 5.5MOA left to compensate for the wind or 3MOA off its butt. You can see the buffalo in the 3rd pic up in the trees,All in all a great time was had.

So Brian, in the end you were the only one... Well, I hope you enjoyed your stay. Looks like little has changed. I can thoroughly recommend the place to anyone who shoots, not only for the ranges but also the facilities and it's just a nice place for the space, and the scenery.

It leads me to believe the unnamed member reside in the Lone Star state.

And you are quite right - The scenery is quite beautiful, most of the year. It was Brian's poor luck he arrived in New Mexico at the same time the International Balloon Fiesta was held. That event attracts all the tourists and poor weather you can want.
