The Grendel rabbit hole (accurate barrel)
#1
So I had my first Grendel AR built a few months ago. It had an 18" Odin barrel and was topped by a Steiner TSi 5x25. I could not get this gun to shoot more then 1.5 MOA. Brought it back to the gunsmith to have him check it over, also sent the scope to Steiner. Steiner changed out the erectors for both windage and elevation as the had some with issues. Took the rifle back out and still shot the same. I then brought it back to my gunsmith and he put another Odin barrel on it. No change... So just as a comparison I took my Noveske SPR and consistently can shoot .5 - .75 with 77gr. Sierras. So I am going to bite the bullet so to say and get either a Noveske (not many reviews) or a Lilja 319. What say the gurus on this forum?

Thank,
Jimmy

What ammo were you using? The wolf isn't know for tight groups and sst's are known to be finicky in some barrels.

There have been many positive reviews on the lija not many reviews on the noveske.

Like BC said what ammo? Not enough info.

What ammo?

What trigger?

Muzzle device square with muzzle?

Did the gunsmith do anything other then slap it together. Meaning did he lapp the reciver?

Did he use enough torque on the barrel nut or bare min of 30#'s?

What did the gas tube look like was it and the handguard/barrel nut properly timed and the gas tube not touching anywhere?

Any chance the scope and or scope mount was working lose?

I have never shot a odin barrel but they seem to have good reviews.

Need more info sir.

Sorry,

Ammo is Hornady Black and SST. Muzzle device and suppressor not an issue, no strikes. SLR gas block. Scope and mount was checked, no issue there. I am not new to shooting or the AR platform as I carried and have shot one since the 80s. Next step is to take a good scope, NF off my OBR and see if that makes a difference, but seeing how they both shot the same was looking on advise about a new barrel. As far as everything being squared my GS said everything was torqued to spec and double checked. I had heard good things about Odin also that is why I have been triple checking and having others try and shoot groups with this rifle. Oh to add trigger is Geislle SDE flat trigger, not my usual SSA, but a great trigger non the less.

Try some Federal 120 AE (if you can) before giving up on the Odin barrel. My LaRue doesn't like any of the factory Hornady stuff, something about it gives it a bad range 'tude. The black - I get 1.25-1.5 out of normally. If I am really stable, feeling great, and there is absolutely nothing to distract me or cause the bench to move, I can get .9-1.1 inch groups with Black. SST is 2 inch stuff, not worth pursuing. The Fed 120 SMK loads though, they easily run 1/2 moa. All performance observed from bench or prone, all groups for size were at least 5 rounds.

For some reason, the Hornady offerings seem to have dropped off lately as far as accuracy from reports here. The Black was consistently reported sub MOA, and the SST the same way. They are more hit and miss of late, especially the SST loads.

Also, if you reload, if I recall correctly LR55 has said that to really test a barrel, get some 120 Matchkings and load up 27.4 gr of Benchmark or 8208HMR. If you can't find a load that's pretty darned good somewhere close to those two charge weights, then something is going on with the barrel. 27.2/120SMK/Rem7.5/Hornady cases makes (2356fps, 8sd, 10es, 5 shots) bugholes for me.

LR55, correct me if I'm mis-remembering that, please - for some reason I can't find the post(s).

To answer your question about barrels, precision firearms had a criterion for sale here ready to ship. Not sure if it sold yet.

Thanks will look for some Federal 120s, I thought that short of reloading that the Hornady was the go to. I was hoping to find some factory load that would shoot as I already reload for 308, 556, and 6.5 x 47 and wanted something I could shoot factory in the subs.

Just b/c no strikes doesn't mean it can't be an issue. See my thread in troubleshooting about my buddies gun and his poor accuracy caused by a muzzle device. It's cheap and quick to try just by removing it... it's just one more variable.

Sst shoots terrible in both my guns. Hornady American hunter shoots really well

was the receiver lapped and trued up?

Are Odin barrel exceptionally smooth on the inside and need very little breaking in or do they need 100 rounds down the pipe to achieve their ultimate accuracy?
I like Ballistic Advantage barrels for their smooth finish on the inside. I have never seen a Lilja or Odin barrel on the inside.

My BA is starting to come alive at 80 rds. I would give that Odin more time and better ammo.

My 18" Odin shot pretty well from new, but it did get better after I got close 100 rounds through it.

Thanks will try removing them both and see if that helps. I am leaning towards getting the Lilja AR319, they have it in stock. My gunsmith uses Odin unless something else is requested. He uses them on all his hunting guns, not that a 1.5 MOA gun can't be used for hunting. As far as lapping I believe he has but will check with him. AE 120 is a pain to find in stock. The 1st Odin I put 200 rounds through with no improvement, this one shot the same to me. Everything I have read about this caliber makes it almost perfect for just about everything if I can get it to shoot Smile.

Yeah... on my buddy's gun it was a huge improvement. On my bolt gun I had a 1/2" load... cut, threaded, added muzzle break for suppressor, went to 1.5".. had to redo load development to bring that back down.. Hopefully it's just a barrel harmonics thing.

Don't forget about the group buy barrels, my 20 inch is showing great results for the price I payed for it.

Haven't really tryed hard for groups but they have been good even so, hits from 200 to 400 on steel are easy.

I have a thread going on it right now and there is a second member that started a thread about his and it looks good too.

If you get on expect a speed jump around 100 to 150 rounds down the pipe and it will pick up a lil speed.

So I just ordered a Lilja AR319 and 200 rounds of Federal OTM 120's. Will see how the Odin barrel likes the 120s and can always use the AR319 on another build is the Odin starts shooting. It's only money right? Can't take it with you and my sons can split up my guns when I am gone Wink.

ARP barrels typically shoot very well, and for a very reasonable 2-250 bucks.

I have a 18" Oden barrel and the only factory ammo I have shot in it was Hornady SST and it would only do 1.5 MOA. With my hand loads it will shoot much better than I can possible hold. It would have bug holed 5 shots many times if I had not got on the trigger too much of something else with one shot. Now that one shot was just a tick outside the bug hole but yet it was me that caused it to be there. It also seems that the more I shoot it the better it shoots but in this rifle it could just be that the more I shoot it the better I SHOOT IT. Gas guns just shoot different than bolt rifles with all the moving parts but just then from the set up standpoint I mate up better to a bolt rifle than a gas gun because of their design. There is a lot more than the bullet going down what ever the barrel that makes an accurate shot.
