Hello fellow Grendeliers - I have learned soooo much while lurking with you folks! I now have a new Grendel upper from Sulzer Firearms, and the barrel is a Faxon Match 416R Stainless Nitrided 18". I plan to use Faxon's recommended break-in procedure. Is there any reason to not use the cheaper Wolf steel ammo for this?
"All shooting should be on a cold bore. No more than one shot every five
seconds.
416-R Stainless Barrels:
1. Shoot once, clean. Repeat five times.
2. Shoot five rounds, clean. Repeat twice.
3. Shoot ten rounds, clean. Repeat twice."
Also, later on, in your expeiences is it acceptable to occasionally use a bore snake after a shooting session?
Any other pointers you can give me will be much appreciated!

The wolf is undersized st .262”. I would not use it for break-in for that reason.

Plus, if it is a 5R rifling then wolf -- or any bi-metal -- is known to not be a good shooter for that rifling, it needs conventional 4- or 6- rifling. I suspect that the faxon is a 5R.
Use Hornady Black or Federal 90 AE or Hornady American gunner. Consistent cartridge, known powders and bullets. After break-in then you can get fancy. Get the round count up to at least 50 before spreading your wings so to speak.

Thanks for that too, and for the 'welcome' as well! Yep, it's a 5R, so I'll use the Hornady AG that I have and save my 'spensive Black for fancy shootin' later. :>)

It's very likely you will find that American Gunner suitable for some reasonably fancy shooting, in its own right.
My rifles shoot it as well as the Hornady Black ELD - just a smidgen less of a BC.
If it's true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for?

And after the barrel is broken-in and 'seasoned', what are your thoughts about using a bore snake, say between thorough cleanings?

Nothing wrong with using a bore snake that is what I use and I have never had any problems with it.

I have yet to see any negative comments from using a bore snake. There are a few older threads about not cleaning as often. That competive shooters want the bore seasoned and fouled for consistency.

Okie dokie then. Thanks again to all of you! Now to complete the assembly and wring it out.
Just wish it wasn't 100+ degrees here in our little piece of South Central Texas! (But then it wouldn't feel like home :>)

Boresnake is all I use these days. Match rifles and blasters, all get cleaned with Bore Snakes.
Once a year I do clean the conventional way but mostly because I have two life time supplies of the conventional stuff.

With the bore snake, how many times to you run it through the barrel? When I rod my barrel, I only go from back to front, remove, then again until 3x through the barrel with a copper brush.

Two pulls with my Sage & Braker snake and my bore looks like a tubular mirror. Shoots better with some soot in there though.

I use Boresnakes before shooting and rods/patches/brushes after shooting. One pass of the Boresnake is enough. If I'm feeling really energetic I might go for a second pass. I don't clean the barrel every time after shooting anymore unless it's suppressed. If you can prevent corrosion in how you store it then frequent barrel cleaning is not needed. My MPI's always shift after cleaning which is why nowadays dirty guns go straight back into the safe.
I like the compartments in some of the Magpul stocks as this is where the bore snake sits with a little bottle of oil. They are useful for field cleaning when you go bush.

Bore Snakes are great. I only clean the barrel when accuracy drops off. I have over 500 rounds so far with my Lilja barrel and it still shoots great.

I have not had good luck with boresnakes. I used to use them all the time. I have had 3 that were so oversized they wouldn't fit in a tube 2 calibers over. I purchased them at sporting goods stores. Nothing wrong with the good ones though. Easy, compact, and reliable in most cases

Trader, I used a bore snake to break in my new, carbon fiber barrel and it worked astoundingly well. I dabbed a little bit of oil on the front end just before the brush after shooting the recommended amount of rounds and she cleaned up quite nicely.

Wow, never woulda thought to use a snake for break-in cleaning. Sure would be easier than a jag and patches between shots!
