what would happen to my new pistol build if i swapped out the regular bolt carrier group and installed a lightweight low mass carrier?? would i need to change anything else or would it still run like greased lightning?? its a new build with the 2a armament upper and lower. i have only shot it once and had zero malfs.
it also shot very accurately.

You would need to be running an AGB. Then you would be able to turn the gas down and reduce felt recoil while decreasing muzzle movement. If you don't have an AGB, you could also look at an adjustable LM carrier.

What can happen is that your cyclic rate goes up, which could result in the carrier overrunning the magazine spring. Basically, you might experience fail to feeds or fail to lock on empty.

By reducing the gas pressure, you lessen the gas impulse felt by the carrier, thus slowing it back down.

Heres a video on the subject i found just a little while ago, its the forgotten weapons/in range channel interview with Jim Sullivan explaining some of the short comings in the design of the AR, one of them the bolt carrier. Kinda neet how controllable his mods are when thry shoot it one handed.
I it also decreases the amount of time it takes to unlock the boltand extract the case. Which increases stress on the extractor. You want more time for pressure to decrease in the chamber.
You might also just have to increase buffer weaight to add what you took out. Thats is typically done to slow down the bolt and solve some issues.
KAK makes a nice adjustable weight buffer pretty cheap to. I think mine was $40 comes with the buffer, two poly caps' 3 sets of 3 tungsten, steel and alum. Weights to custom tune it to pretty much any weight.

JP usually make top notch stuff and also makes an adjustable weight buffer spring. In their SCS system.
You could probably find stronger mag springs as well. Such as installing a 25rnd spring in 17 or 17 in a 10rnd body.
So im not saying its not possible, but not as straight forward as some would lead you to beleive. It could be. Just go in knowing the possibilities.

you are probably right. reliability is more important than a couple ounces of weight. i need to get to the range and spend more time working with it.

i left it as is... i built another with a mcgowan 12" light weight barrel. i put in the lite bolt carrier and regular buffer and spring. i put about 25 rounds thru it without any malfunctions. my first group was 1.5" then the next three were all sub moa with factory sst. i then put some wolf steel cased ammo thru it. it shot 1-2". my friend with the same barrel had a 2.5" group at 200 yards. the barrels like the wolf. lol how funny is that?/

I am running a light weight bc in my pistol with a light spring and a standard buffer with 2/3 the weight removed. Dialed almost closed on the gas block and it runs nice and smooth. Might not work for full auto but it’s nice.

my gas block is fixed..(as in non adjustable) the bolt locks back when empty and the brass is thrown about five feet at 4 oclock. just perfect
